March is by far the busiest, yet most fun month of the year for dance music lovers and professionals. SXSW (Austin) and WMC (Miami) both host tens of thousands of enthusiasts from around the world, and this year we teamed up with our good friends TAVIK, a music driven lifestyle brand designed for active individuals engaged in modern beach culture, for an epic RV road trip across America, hitting stops from Los Angeles to Miami over the course of nearly two weeks, starting Tuesday, March 19th. With our very own GDD DJs Bones, Troy Kurtz, and Burn Unit in tow, we hopped on board a few of our friends’ showcases, as well as presented a couple ourselves. Here’s how it all went down…
After a much needed sleep recharge, we awoke the next day revived and ready to hit Austin hard. Downtown was already bustling with crowds swarming the streets, a cool breeze making our trek all the worth while. We headed straight to the Fader Fort party, eager to experience what had been talked up as a must during the week of events. Our early arrival paid off huge, beating the masses (which would later make to be one of the most serious lines we had ever seen). The Fader Fort was no makeshift showcase – the fort-like layout featured interactive areas with everything from free haircuts to foosball to a serious open bar with Bushmills Arnold Palmers and unlimited tall cans of Budweiser.
We got there just in time to see the SXSW debut of UK’s Rudimental, an incredible live performance that as they described “put soul back into electronic music.” After some downtime in the couch abundant lounge area, we caught sets by Ra Ra Riot, afro-punk duo The Bots, the heavily anticipated live performance of Disclosure (that did not disappoint), and phenom rapper Future, who brought out T.I. and Usher…
Austin, Texas: the home of keeping things weird. On March 13th, our friends at Dim Mak intend to do just that at this year’s Austin 2013 Showcase. They’ve teamed up with Buygore – label of the King of Filth himself, Borgore–and Scion to bring you an event filled with madness and mayhem. Expect appearances from Borgore, AutoErotique, PeaceTreaty, Carnage, Scanners, Azari & III, and many more. You won’t want to miss out on this event, so RSVP NOW for FREE entry to the Dim Mak official Austin 2013 showcase.
Not only do Evan and Mike of Toronto duo, Torro Torro, make the best gifs in the game for their seasonal mixtapes, they also curate one hell of a tracklist. After racking up a ton of attention this week with their Beatport-charting remixes for Zedd and Zed’s Dead (both included in this mix), Torro Torro have put together a pumping selection of new tunage — GTA’s “Hit It,” Diplo & DJ Fresh’s “Up (Earthquake)”, and ETC!ETC!’s “How You Like Me Now” to name a few. The guys are having a busy March along with the rest of us, hitting SxSW and Miami along with a string of West Coast gigs peppered throughout. Catch all of their tour dates here and grab the mix below!
Daedelus has always been a champion of pushing unique live presentations, and his Magical Properties tours are a wonderful platform with which to showcase both his amazing live show and the wonderful talent he chooses to bring on board. This time he’s joined by the likes of “the remix Ryan Gosling” Ryan Hemsworth and Body High boss Samo Sound Boy for a 6 week tour, with pop-up support from Salva, Shlohmo, and Two Fresh.
I spoke with Samo Sound Boy just as the weekend was approaching about the tour and what’s up in his world and the Body High world. Samo’s a really great dude who I’m super pleased to see hopping on the Magical Properties tour. Go peep our conversation after the jump, where we talk about California weather, how to party in Miami, studio essentials, and more:
Another great name making their prominence known early this year have been Jokers Of The Scene. The Canadian duo just last week released a techno shaped 5-track EP on Fool’s Gold Records called J0T5, with a seasoned RMXD EP on deck. Over the weekend we were able to sit down (on the internetz) with the Jokers to hear a little more about the EP and what else is new. So give it a read! You might just learn a thing er 2… Oh did I mention the exclusive remix they wanted to give the GDD readers just because they love you that much? SCORE.
Fresh off of massive performances at Ultra and SXSW and prepping for an equally massive US tour, ZEDS DEAD have gotten love from everyone from BBC Radio 1′s Kissy Sell Out to GQ Magazine to Much Music (Canada’s MTV, remember?) while maintaining the signature raw energy of their live shows alongside the elegant brutality of their productions.
You’ve been chomping at the bit on our GDD Facebook since we announced this release, so without further ado it is my distinct pleasure to present to you ZEDS DEAD – 1975. Full track download, tour dates and a video of Christiano Ronaldo’s righteously (ridiculously) sexy Russian girlfriend Irina Shayk grinding dirty to the track in her intimate wear. Seriously…
