Hayden James set the blogs afire back in June with his silky smooth single, “Permission to Love,” reaching #1 on Hype Machine and racking up over 400K listens on Soundcloud thus far, and today, his self-titled EP sees release on GDD™ fav imprint, Future Classic. In addition to “Permission to Love,” the Hayden James EP chalks up 4 other originals equally as impressive, showcasing an attractive downtempo R&B style that is just plain sexy and lovely to listen to in the headphones. If I had to pick, “Lay Down” is probably my favorite jimmy jam on the release, but listen to it all and make your own decision. √+
Well, the young #freelife boys have done it again. Bixel Boys are no strangers to the fusion of R&B with dance music, injecting the R&B vibe into both their DJ sets and their remix selections. This time, they pick none other than one of the most MFTF (music to…. you fill in the rest) R&B babes in the game Robin Thicke for what they VERY BRILLIANTLY dub an “R&Bmix” (this is almost as good a dub as ‘Skreamix’… almost). I really love that they have called this “girl trap” which is both wildly hilarious and mildly inappropriate. Go have a listen for yourself, and when you hear this in the club I dare you to not A. gyrate to this or B. gawk at girls gyrating to this. Bixel Boys, you dogs.
Oh yeah, free download. Bitches love a free download.

Oh boy I am very excited about the guest mix this week. One of my latest and most exciting discoveries is young French beat boy Phazz, and in this fine week of July he’s handed over an absolutely wonderful exclusive guest mix to us. Chock full of exclusives, intelligent re-works, and various unique up-and-comers, the mix explores the beat-based jambalaya of everything from jazz, R&B, and club influences and beyond. I see huge amounts of potential in Phazz, his work with vocal-pitching on remixes of Ryan Leslie and Cassie is really astounding and the direction he’s been taking as of late has a huge appeal.
You can stream and download his mix via our Soundcloud, and check out the tracklist and our interview with him after the jump. I predict big things from Phazz, really excited to see what’s next!
Fellow Angeleno, Kill Paris, is back with another release on OWSLA; this time leaning into the R&B world with some sexy vocals from two collaborators, Marty Rod and Alma. The single comes as a taste of his upcoming EP due out this fall on the aforementioned label. Hoping the other tracks on the release keep this vibe going.
