Last week, we were very excited to premiere the amazingly groovy Gigamesh remix of the brand new Punks Jump Up track featuring the sultry vocals of Dave 1 of Chromeo, and this week, we are pleased to share the colorful, animated music video of the original. Sexy, bright, and voluptuous is how I would describe this music video — the funky track blends perfectly with the neon illumination throughout the entire production. Pick up the Mr. Overtime EPwith remixes from Mickey, Gigamesh, and Oliver out on Moda Music a week from today! √+
Joe Attard & David Andersson AKA Punks Jump Up are out with a grooving new single that features the undeniably sexy vocals from Chromeo‘s Dave 1, who supposedly heard a demo from the PJU guys and felt an urge to throw some words on top of it. On April 30th, the EP package will be released on Moda Music and accompanied by 4 other mixes of the original. Stream the premiere of the Gigamesh remix and read on for the full EP tracklist and another little surprise from Oliver. √+
Mickey is no stranger to dance music. Hailing from Belgium, he has residency at the infamous Libertine Supersport, surrounded by legends such as The Magician, Mustang, and Aeroplane. He’s definitely a contributing factor to Belgium’s musical excellence. I have seen his sets, and for lack of better words, I have been absolutely blown away. If you’re one of the lucky few that happens to catch one, be prepared to loose control of your extremities and burn holes in the soles of your Chuck Taylor’s. The sound mixes golden elements from the past, then spices them up into a perfect groove & funk, Mickey style. Flavours tease the pallet consisting of a strong drum kick, bouncy chords, and precision production. He’s done remixes for the likes of Tyson, Beni, Headman, Punks Jump Up, and Housse De Racket.
GDD :Where are you from & How has that influenced your music? How do you self-describe your musical style / taste? I’m from Belgium more precisely from Brussels. Its where my studio is. The city influences me by feeling good and at home at the same time. We have a large musical culture over here.
When it comes to my music, i always try to combine big liner notes and a groove full of percussion, synth’s, piano’s and strings. Sometimes i even play extra guitar riffs on top. The goal for me is to make it the way i want to hear it myself on the radio.
GDD: How does your equipment differ from your onstage gear to what you use in the studio? Very different! My studio gears are all instruments. On stage i’m playing live with Record Effects and 2 x CDJ 1000 & Mixing table.
GDD: Describe your perfect venue down, setting, and vibe down to the littlest detail. I really enjoy playing close to the sea, what happened to me a couple of weeks ago in Australia, the response of the people is completely different. After your finished you can refresh yourself in the water en get a cool beer on top! These kind of venues are rare in Europe, especially in Belgium.
GDD: How do you go about picking tracks you’d like to remix? Until now, it was always on request. But i need to chase more the tracks i like, i will try my luck in the coming weeks : )
GDD: What are your 5 favorite tracks play out right now? Miguel Migs – Tonight (Fingerman Re-Poke) Todd Terje – Snooze 4 Love (Original Mix) Jonas Rathsman – Tobago Maceo Plex – Falling (Original Mix) Azealia Banks -212
GDD: What are 5 artists we need to keep our ears open for? ( all from Belgium ). Safari Montevideo ATTari Mustang Great Mountain fire
GDD: What does the year of 2012 hold for the great Mickey? My new single featuring Monarchy on Smile Recordings, the release of some unreleased remixes and a bunch of new tracks and collaborations!
GDD: And finally, because everyone wants to know, when will we finally see ‘Punks jump Up – Mr Overtime (Mickey Remix)’? They promised that it will see the daylight in march 2012 … But ask to the Punks buddy’s yourself : )
On a Sunday night, in a beach town not so far away from you, I cracked open a Pacifico and began to ponder what I would do as the elusive evening drew closer and city lights began to flicker on. I decided to soul-search and ate a few silver-striped mushrooms out of an old embroidered Chinese box I had hidden beneath the dock. As I walked along the beach, the sand softly tickled my toes and the waves crashed in a perfect symphony. Just then, Poseidon’s froth had washed something hard up onto my foot. It was a glistening whiskey bottle; Jameson’s own to be exact. I opened it up, expecting a rich carmel liquid to engulf my soul and warm it from the inside out. However, out fell a flash drive where the words “Gooch-Tape #1″ were engraved. It was a sign; a sign that good things were coming. A sign that the warmth and sun-kissed poolside jams of summer would flow into the colorful world autumn had to offer. Warm your soul and paint your walls gold!

TK: My British pal SweetFA and myself have been given the honor to dish out to you the 38th installment of THE DIRT, and we couldn’t be giddier if we tried. You’ll find that I take a trip through history and shell out some of my all-time favorite garage/funkybass/dubstep tunes from the past that might have slipped under your guard, while my UK cohort gets you up to speed on the all the big house records that are just dying to become staples in your iTunes library. We hope you enjoy listening as much as we did compiling.
• Bran Van 3000 – Astounded (MJ Cole Mix) MJ Cole has been one of my favorite producers ever since I first got into EDM. As a pioneer of of the 2-step and UK garage scenes, he’s been putting out amazing records for well over a decade. This remix dates back to 2001, and I still regard it as one of the grooviest tunes in my collection.
• Lemonade – Lifted (Hackman Remix) Riding on the coattails of MJ Cole comes the new generation of funky producers, and I rate Hackman as one of my favorite new artists. Last summer he burst onto the radar with his ‘More Than Ever‘ EP, and followed it up with his latest EP which came out this month called ‘Close‘, which I highly recommend.
• Joker & Jakes – 3k Lane (L-Vis 1990 Dubble Step Edit) If you’ve recently caught the dubstep bug a la Skrillacks, then you might not have heard of the monumental smash that was ‘3k Lane‘. Prior to the era of ‘Scary Sprites’, tunes like this used to be the highlight of bass nights. Night Slugs hotshot L-Vis 1990 put out a few of these ‘Dubble Step Edits’ a few years ago that are way cool. Hunt for the other ones, you won’t be disappointed.
• A1 Bassline & Kavsrave – Lucky Charms I’ve always loved tracks at the 130 bpm range that have a half-time dubstep bit to them. This track has been a staple in my bassy sets ever since it came out in ’09 and still sounds current. If you haven’t copped A1 Bassline’s ‘Shock Headed’ EP, do so immediately (Shock Headed is an 808 MONSTER).
• Skream – Rutten I’ll close with one of my all-time favorite Skream joints. The combination of woodwinds + low-end sub-bass in this late-night serenade makes certain parts of my body tingle that I don’t need to expand upon. I also have to give a big congratulations to Oliver and his missus on their recent son!
FA:Striking a balance with Troy’s dutty selection, I’ve opted for the housey and techier stuff. It’s a selection of some of the freshest tunes out there, together with a few surprises from my personal stash! It goes without saying, all are tunes I’m digging a lot at the moment. Dance on, lads and ladies…
For our thirty-sixth edition of the infamous DIRT, we bring you a top 12 chart of some of the best tracks right now in electronic music from pretty much across the board. Though they all share a common dirty-ness to them, we chose these tracks for unique reasons – and what better way to convey that then to charm you with our personal opinion on why you should direct yourself to the download link immediately (the best way we know how to).
drink up dirty dancers…
DIRTY •Felix Cartal & Keatch – Lazy Bird (Original Mix)√+
I’ve literally waited over a year for this track to be released, and for it to have stayed locked away until just a week ago is a marvel in its own. We all know that Felix Cartal has caught our attention once again with his recent productions, but the help of Belgium-based Keatch makes their collaborative EP’s Solar and now Animals unmatchable. Grab this in 192 and do yourself a solid and purchase the full EP here.
BIG ROOM •Swanky Tunes & Hard Rock Sofa – Feedback (Original Mix)√+
This summer wherever you are in festival mode, you’re gonna hear headliners from the main stage (you should know who) playing this massive collaboration between big room track kings Swanky Tunes and Hard Rock Sofa. This one also has the same riff as Daft Punk’s ‘Rollin & Scratchin’ – but takes it to a level suitable for crowds in the 25,000+ category. BIG.
DIRTY DISCO •In Flagranti – Worse For Wear (Punks Jump Up Remix)√+
The first time I heard this in the Light Year Summer Mix, I played the mix over and over just because of this track. The howling bass line behind the drums, claps and cowbells (with a hint of dirty sax) turn the original vocal into a drunken disco fire-starter.
BASS •DJ Fresh – Louder (Club Mix)√+
Even though I don’t play out dubstep (or bass music for that matter) in my sets, I still respect it very much because of anthems like this one. This track is special however because of the newly found sound of drum & bass hero DJ Fresh. Groundbreaking tune, a MUST even if you don’t care for dubstep. Grab this 192, but get serious with the 320 here.
FUNKY •Julio Bashmore – Battle For Middle You √+
This officially came out at the very start of this year, but I haven’t been able to stop playing it out in my sets, in my car, or any where I can feel some low end with this baby. Julio Bashmore creates a love child with funk, soul and bass driven rhythm. In fact, the lyrics in the tune actually ring true because they definitely make me wanna get up, stomp my feet, and get down.
FUTURE •Kry Wolf – 3001 (Original Mix)√+
AC Slater struck gold when he discovered Kry Wolf and signed him to his Party Like Us label. His production flies across the board, but this track is titled ‘3001’ because it is takes you that far ahead in time to the future of the drop. Let this one grow on you, it’s the best kind of WEIRD you could ask for.
MOOMBAHTON •Tittsworth & Alvin Risk – Pendejas
Great new track from two of Washington DC’s best. More along the lines of moombahcore. If you dig artists like Munchi & Dillon Francis you will love this track.
ELECTRO DISCO • LBCK – Instant Party
Great new track with a great summer vibe, Huge EP from the Long Beach based duo.
GRINDCORE •Bassnectar – Upside Down
A new release from one of the bass game’s heavyweights. It is just what we have come to expect from Bassnectar over the years: HEAVY HEAVY bass.
Lemme just say that I cant believe this track has been out for a month and has slipped by me. I’m ashamed. WHAT A TUNE. The London duo Punks Jump Up take a barrage of drums, cowbells and claps (not to mention a killer sax riff) and decorate a howling bassline in what has now become my favorite groovy track of the moment… and their giving it away for FREE. We all win my dirty dancers. GET AFTER IT!
