The entire Dirtybird crew has had one hell of a year, but no one broke out as far as Justin Jay. This part-time USC student, part time bass slinging globetrotter claims the youngest spot on the San Francisco-based label’s roster. Shoulder to shoulder with big guns like Claude VonStroke, Justin Martin, Gorgon City, and more, Justin Jay has proven himself to be a force in bass music. Today, we all get a taste of his forthcoming 3-track Momentum EP that includes a collaboration with Kill Frenzy. The first single is a light, upbeat track called “You Give My Butterflies.” A painfully charming melody suited for the 100 acre woods bounces off of a skillfully crafted bass and synth arrangement. The track comes as a beautiful retort, following some more dark and gritty releases from Justin Jay. The Momentum EP is due out on Monday, March 16th via Catz’ ‘N Dogz‘ Pets Recordings.
“As I’m finishing up an incredible last year of college, and getting to do all of these amazing things in music, it’s felt natural making happy, lighthearted songs that really capture my mood these days. I’ve spent a large part of the last year exploring darker sounds and textures. I definitely want to continue experimenting in that direction, but I wouldn’t want to neglect my goofy, cheerful side either. “You Give Me Butterflies” is a carefree day at the beach, spent with your friends, acting like 8 year-olds.” - Justin Jay

Whilst everyone was likely busy prepping their stomachs and couches for Superbowl Sunday, I was catching up with some of my favorite young producers from England, Maribou State and Pedestrian, via a fun little Twitter interview. I’ve been really stoked on what these guys have been doing for quite a while (matter of fact, I think Maribou State were one of the first groups I ever interviewed…) so when they sent over their amazing new collab track “Mask” I knew it was time for a chat again. Out on Pets Recordings today, “Mask” is a truly beautiful tune & actually just got announced as Radio 1′s track of the week. The lush amount of positive feedback is a step in a very well-deserved direction for the boys & I’m eager to see where they go next.

“Make sure you make me look like a complete wanker.” were Eats Everything’s (aka Daniel Pearce) parting words to me. Mind you, this is at a cracking warehouse party around 5AM, where he’s still bouncing around and having a (ahem) JOLLY GOOD TIME. That’s just the type of person the house producer from Bristol is. Brimming with cheeky English humor and infectious personality, it took all of half a second upon meeting him to realize this was going to be the easiest interview ever.
You can read the interview after the jump, and be sure to check out his new EP on dirtybird, and tune into his radio show on IHeartRadio every Thursday at 9PM EST.
