Maybe it was all the great bands at Coachella this past weekend, or maybe it’s the sweltering heat that’s found its way back to Southern California but by golly gosh it’s getting too damn hot for house music. We’ve decided to beat the heat with an early Summer edition of our Too Hot 4 House Music series featuring plenty of indie, alternative, rock, and some blues to keep you feeling cool and collected. Big ups to SoCal’s own Burger Records for some strong recent releases and shoutout to Black Pistol Fire and Dreaming Bull for tracks that have stood the test of time. The second half settles more in the indie, folk, singer/songwriter realm with additions from City & Colour, RY X, and Julien Baker as well as some R&B from JMSN and rising star Anderson Paak.
The duo behind Coast Modern met whilst finding their way as songwriters in the bustling jungle that is the Los Angeles music scene. But after empty attempts at making music for other people, Coleman Trapp took matters into his own hands… He relocated to Denver, Colorado and started anew with band mate Luke Atlas holding down the fort in LA and found his voice and direction once again. Communicating with acoustic demos and e-mail servers, the two struck a chord and Coleman was coerced to mosey on back to sunny Southern California. With a renewed sense of vigor and optimism the two hit the ground running and have been known as Coast Modern ever since. Their latest, “Animals,” is an indie-pop primer that blends the bubbly pop vibes with the laid back LA lifestyle. Have a listen after the jump and stream the single that started it all, “Hollow Life.”
It was the coldest dance floor that ever was at the Los Coyotes Indian Reservation as 96 hours of House, Techno, and Love warmed you from the inside out. What the weather lacked in warmth was more than made up for with supernova sets from some of the biggest names in underground. Now, the energy is focused on the 13 date City Hearts tour to keep the Desert Hearts vibe alive and it’s sure to warm your winter spirits. Watch the recap above and find out where to catch a groove at a city near you after the jump! Continue Reading

It’s been a while, you could say, since it was last possible to catch Audion (Mathew Dear’s Techno Alter Ego) on tour. In that time you may have discovered your love for techno, as he discovered a love for changing the way you receive Techno live. With a career expansive album in the works titled, “Audion X,” Mathew Dear has put together an evening long odyssey to accompany the immersive audio visual content from his forthcoming album. SUBVERTICUL will feature a custom stage setup that was built by Heather Shaw (of Amon Tobin’s groundbreaking ISAM tour fame), whose team has created a labyrinth sculpture based off the Audion “A” that pulses, spins, and grows in response to Audion‘s ever shifting rhythms. We recently had the chance to speak with Dear about what to expect this Saturday at the El Rey, how it all came together, and how it is all still coming together. Continue Reading
