Always Never label head Le Castle Vania is firing up the label (cheesy pun well intended) with his latest EP, Feels Like Fire. In it, Le Castle Vania continues to explore re-evaluations of his old records, as well as showing off more collaborations and vocalists from artists we’ve seen him work with in the past. It’s clear Le Castle Vania puts a lot of time into his tracks… the finesse in his technique is noticeable with the structure and engineering of every track on the release. The EP is noticeably less dark and aggressive than his previous work on mau5trap, the signature is all still there but Feels Like Fire makes more of an adult, emotional statement.
The EP begins with “Nobody Gets Out Alive Part II” – where Le Castle Vania revisits one of his older hits (previously with “Through A Keyhold Part II”). New synths, melodies and breakdowns on the track see Part II with an even clearer focus and an amplification of energy and aesthetic. “Come Together” is the second track and lead single for the EP, instantly enticing you with a haunting yet simple synth line. The track then tunnels into a high-speed adventure with a jumpy and pitched drop. At this point in the EP (and in general) it’s quite clear that Le Castle Vania sonically lives in a super-future universe, it’s TRON with all of the bad-assery and none of the cheese. The third track, “Moving In Time” sees Le Castle Vania collaborating with longtime friend and fellow producer MUST DIE – it’s a thrill ride of saw synths and gut punches colorfully strung along by hollowed piano melodies. Then we see another friend and fellow Always Never associate Crywolf on “Part Of Me” – Crywolf making a prominent appearance here with his signature and poignant piano work. The closer track, “Driving Away” is very appropriately titled, as the mood of the track fits perfectly with the movie Drive‘s theme.
All in all, Le Castle Vania continues to show he has not strayed far from his original sound, but instead progressed to his best form yet within it. These are pieces of work that are intricately and carefully made – every sound and layer tweaked and adjusted to peak form. He’s a master of his craft – and it’s nice to see an artist dust off a major track from their catalog and shed the dead weight off it and polish it to a nice sheen.
One of the first tracks I discovered from Le Castle Vania was his exceptional remix of Walter Meego’s ‘Through A Keyhole,’ and ever since then I’ve always respected his skill at really flipping tracks into energetic remixes. I didn’t really vibe the original track from Meego but best believe the Le Castle Vania remix had me singing (and dancing) to a different tune, metaphorically and literally.
Well it’s 2014 and Le Castle Vania’s been having some fun downtime in the studio re-working some of his older remixes. My guess is there’s some other updated remixes in his arsenal (let’s hope one of them is ‘Rave Is King’ cuz that was a frigging T U N E) but obviously the first one to drop is his fresh new look at the ‘Through A Keyhole’ remix. Although the general feel of the remix remains the same, the slight adjustment to the chord progressions and melodies and CLEAR tightening of the mixing make all the difference. Like buying a great outfit and getting it properly tailored. Plus he’s giving it up for download so really it’s just a no brainer here.
Stay tuned for likely more re-works for Le Castle Vania, the remixes to his Prophication EP drop soon on mau5trap too.
Le Castle Vania has never really taken any prisoners. In a musical landscape where the winds of change knock over the faint of heart or blow them into a field they cannot grow in, Le Castle Vania remains a steadfast entity who is remarkably true to his roots and more powerful than ever before.
The Prophication EP, out now on mau5trap, is a long time coming for the LA-based producer, and in a tongue-in-cheek naming of the title, is an indicator to an even bigger, badder release. It’s an immense piece of work; the four tracks each contain an explosive amount of sound engineering and layers, from live strings (done with the help of 300’s composer Tyler Bates) to rumbling bass lines.
Le Castle Vania‘s label Always Never is back this year with a brand new artist added to their roster, a young North Carolina chap under the name Crywolf. In anticipation for his upcoming 5-Track ep, Ghosts released later this spring, Crywolf is giving away his latest collaboration with Ianborg away for free download via his Soundcloud.
Give a listen to the track below, it’s a dope little tune that Crywolf lends his own very nice vocals to. Lots of really winding melodic builds that crash into an eerie but captivating breakdown. Proper dark & deep ocean vibes. And make sure to keep a look out for his Ghosts EP out soon on Always Never.
I’ll be the first to admit I’m usually hesitant about an artists first release. I cling to the familiar, like all humans with a subconscious mind do. However, newcomer to the scene and LA local Mad Owl froze over (terrible pun) any hesitance I may have with his new track Glacier, out now on Le Castle Vania’s label, Always Never.
