The buzzing quartet from Toronto known as Azari & III have been undeniably one of the breakthrough acts of 2011. With their debut album out now on limited edition vinyl and digital retailers and the global and physical release coming on January 22nd through Island Records, Azari & III have a busy several months ahead of them. In advance of the global release, the guys will be releasing another single, ‘Reckless (With Your Love),’ on January 15th from the self-titled album, which will be accompanied by an all-star remix team including new versions from Riva Starr, Julio Bashmore, and Tiga, as well as a radio edit and mix from super-producer Paul Epworth. Yes, I really just said all of those names in the same sentence. Before these release dates, Azari & III will be touring the UK with a mindblowing live show that has already garnered support from The XX, Tinie Tempah, and even Johnny Depp! • Junkie XL – Molly’s E (Azari & III Instrumental Remix)
Junkie XL released his latest EP,’ Molly’s E,’ a couple weeks ago which featured 2 mixes from Azari & III, 2 mixes from Nicky Romero, and 1 from Canblaster. Not a bad lineup if you ask me.
In the wee hours of yesterday Julio Bashmore became the latest artist to feature on Pete Tong‘s legendary Essential Mix show. Hailing from Bristol, Matthew Walker’s been kicking up a lot of heat over the past 18 months for both his unique brand of funky-infused house music as Julio Bashmore, and his bassier Velour sideproject on Night Slugs with Hyetal.
It was his sublime Everybody Needs A Theme Tune EP on London upstart PMR at the beginning of this year that catapulted him into the underground spotlight, with A-side ‘Battle For Middle You’ receiving widespread chart support by everyone from Modeselektor, Brodinski and Sound Pellegrino Thermal Team, to Wolf+Lamb, Alex Niggemann and Maya Jane Coles.
This latest Essential Mix is a great journey through the record bag belonging to Bristol’s freshest export, and one of the most versatile EM’s we’ve heard all year:

Hot off of some serious hype for his recent Woman Like Me EP Remixes, Chicago native Willy Joy is keeping it going with a massive fall mixtape featuring loads of new tracks and exclusives. You’ll hear everything from some Brooklyn Bass from AC Slater and Bart B More to some hometown Chicago flavor from Cajmere to the grooving insta-classic from Julio Bashmore, ‘Battle For Middle You.’ It’s an eclectic mix for the masses, but don’t just take my word for it. “The seasons are changing and I put together a new mix for Fall to help you shift gears. House, Techno, Electro, Moombahton and more – this is a bass heavy mix full of new sounds, classic sounds, and a few exclusives you won’t hear anywhere else. For our thirty-sixth edition of the infamous DIRT, we bring you a top 12 chart of some of the best tracks right now in electronic music from pretty much across the board. Though they all share a common dirty-ness to them, we chose these tracks for unique reasons – and what better way to convey that then to charm you with our personal opinion on why you should direct yourself to the download link immediately (the best way we know how to).
drink up dirty dancers…
• Felix Cartal & Keatch – Lazy Bird (Original Mix) √+
I’ve literally waited over a year for this track to be released, and for it to have stayed locked away until just a week ago is a marvel in its own. We all know that Felix Cartal has caught our attention once again with his recent productions, but the help of Belgium-based Keatch makes their collaborative EP’s Solar and now Animals unmatchable. Grab this in 192 and do yourself a solid and purchase the full EP here.
• Swanky Tunes & Hard Rock Sofa – Feedback (Original Mix) √+
This summer wherever you are in festival mode, you’re gonna hear headliners from the main stage (you should know who) playing this massive collaboration between big room track kings Swanky Tunes and Hard Rock Sofa. This one also has the same riff as Daft Punk’s ‘Rollin & Scratchin’ – but takes it to a level suitable for crowds in the 25,000+ category. BIG.
• In Flagranti – Worse For Wear (Punks Jump Up Remix) √+
The first time I heard this in the Light Year Summer Mix, I played the mix over and over just because of this track. The howling bass line behind the drums, claps and cowbells (with a hint of dirty sax) turn the original vocal into a drunken disco fire-starter.
• DJ Fresh – Louder (Club Mix) √+
Even though I don’t play out dubstep (or bass music for that matter) in my sets, I still respect it very much because of anthems like this one. This track is special however because of the newly found sound of drum & bass hero DJ Fresh. Groundbreaking tune, a MUST even if you don’t care for dubstep. Grab this 192, but get serious with the 320 here.
• Julio Bashmore – Battle For Middle You √+
This officially came out at the very start of this year, but I haven’t been able to stop playing it out in my sets, in my car, or any where I can feel some low end with this baby. Julio Bashmore creates a love child with funk, soul and bass driven rhythm. In fact, the lyrics in the tune actually ring true because they definitely make me wanna get up, stomp my feet, and get down.
• Kry Wolf – 3001 (Original Mix) √+
AC Slater struck gold when he discovered Kry Wolf and signed him to his Party Like Us label. His production flies across the board, but this track is titled ’3001′ because it is takes you that far ahead in time to the future of the drop. Let this one grow on you, it’s the best kind of WEIRD you could ask for.
• CSS – Hit Me Like a Rock (Dillon Francis Remix)
Another killer free tune from Mr.Francis. Radio rips have been floating around for awhile, but it was finally released this past week.
DRUM & BASS
• Botnek – Jerpa (Botnek Drum & Bass Remix)
An uncommon Drum & Bass remix from this up and coming Canadian Duo. If you like this track, check out the guest Dirt they did a few weeks back for some more major tunes. They are definitely a group to watch.
• Tittsworth & Alvin Risk – Pendejas
Great new track from two of Washington DC’s best. More along the lines of moombahcore. If you dig artists like Munchi & Dillon Francis you will love this track.
• Lady Gaga – The Edge of Glory (Porter Robinson Club Mix)
I am usually not a huge fan of any of the new pop electro house that has been going around these days. But I must admit, I really like this track. The drop in the middle is worth the download!
• The Dirt #36 – ///BONES & KMOC.zip (all 12 tracks!)
Last summer, fellow blog bros Tron Jeremy, ///Bones, and I made exclusive mixes for our good friends over at Hot Biscuits. We were told they could be any genre, any style, any whatever. At the time, I had a major falling out with our lascivious lover, Miss Electro, and went pretty left-field, which spawned the first Haute and Bothered. Since then, the obscurity of artists like James Blake, Julio Bashmore, and Canblaster have filled that hole in my heart was left gaping after my sorrowful break-up. Raise your glasses, folks. We’re toasting to the future.
This past few weeks has been particularly strong for EP releases. Two weeks ago, GDD™ head honcho Jonah Berry brought to our attention Julio Bashmore‘s recent mix for Vice mag. Julio’s recent EP entitled Everyone Needs A Theme Tune has been kicking up mad heat in the UK, and rightly so, it’s a fantastic record. The EP’s remixes have also recently dropped, my favorite of which is by rising talent Maurice Donovan, who also goes by the name of Ramadanman and Pearson Sound. That’s up for streaming below. [Purchase Link]
A second release I’ve been enjoying is the new Cassius EP I <3 U So out on Ed Banger. The title track is pretty catchy although from a production perspective I find it difficult to listen to as it’s pretty heavy on the hi’s, but I dig the EP’s remixes from Skream, and B-side from Night Slugs‘ L-Vis 1990. [Purchase Link]
The third and final EP I’ve had on repeat is the brand new Canblaster release Master of Complication, which is out on Nightshifters. The Club Cheval resident provides some dank coverage of the tropical and UK Garage end of the EDM spectrum. Big fan of this record, it’s among my favorite releases of 2011 so far, and a real grower. Second A-side ‘Triple Ring’ is the most impressive track on the EP, which sees remixes from Jess Jubilee and Magnum, while Para One & Teki-Latex provide 3 renditions of Canblaster’s ‘Clockworks’ to round out a super solid release. Be sure to check it out. [Purchase Link]
The redhead/househead from Bristol, Julio Bashmore, has been on my radar for a hot second now, mostly because any artist signed to dirtybird automatically makes my ears perk up, but this guy has been banging out some absolutely fantastic house tracks in the past couple years. Just this month, Julio has already released two original tracks on dirtybird’s BASS compilation as well as his ‘Everyone Needs A Theme Tune EP’ on PMR, and now he is currently working on a remix for Delphic, some kind of collaboration/remix with Mary Anne Hobbes, and of course, more choons for the bossman Claude VonStroke over at DB. I think it’s safe to say that we’ll be hearing a fair amount from this guy in 2011. Grab a preview of two of Mr. Bashmore’s tracks below, and make sure to head on over to Beatport and buy EVERYTHING.

Happy almost Halloween! It’s that time of year when girls dress with less, guys try to come up with some type of clever yet relevant costume, and ‘candy’ takes on a far different meaning than when you were munchin’ those Reese’s at 10pm after a serious trick or treating session in the 3rd grade.
