I’ve got to be honest here– it’s pretty neat to see your best buds produce music you really love, particularly when it’s one of GDD’s own. The first time Tropicool played this out, I leaned over and asked him what the Hell this remix was. You can imagine my delight when he replied, “an old analog Juno and some incredible stems.” You sly bastard.
His signature touch of feel-good cosmic radiation we know from his mixtapes and Waves ≠ Raves series shines through into his production as well, which that fabulous, fat bassline punches over all the way through. I’m not huge on disco, but I’m a sucker for a big sexy groove when I can get it, and this one’s got me hooked. Pour yourself a glass of rum and tell people it’s iced tea, there’s no turning back now… the funk has been unleashed.
It’s practically fact that you can’t have a bad Monday if you kick it off with a little trip to funky town. Miami’s Panic Bomber has reworked The Godfather of Funk and churned out 10 minutes of thigh burning heat. The tasteful ode to one of music’s all-time greats makes it difficult to listen to this one and not have the urge to start dancing.
March is a pivotal time for new releases with WMC and festival season in sight. Our GDD familiars THEE COOL CATS made their imprint for this month with their OOPS EP release today on Nervous Records, boasting a trifecta of funky driven tunes that slap deep on the low end. The boys once again execute soulful vocals atop powerful basslines that groove all the way through. See if you can recognize the inspirations behind “Love Parade” and “Oops”… Listen below and support this EP on beatport!
Found another diamond in the rough. The Venice Beach native Erik Wilkinson aka Wilks has only emerged on soundcloud a few months ago, but already has the right idea by releasing free originals from the get go. The style provokes classic house chords carried by deep basslines and funky riffs, with vox samples from the likes of Q-Tip, Bob Marley, and The Chili Peppers that prove hauntingly perfect. His most recent single “Ghetto” is below, along with with my other favorites from his so far. Grab these below and follow this dude, let’s see where he goes…
Coyote Kisses keep it funky-fresh with their new single and video for “Black Cat.” The sublime, ultra-cool visuals of the video combined with the signature “space punk” CK sound make for a rad experience that definitely had me grooving. Best part: the song is available for download off the Coyote Kisses FB. Aw yiss, free music!
Seductive, funky, pounding; Kill Paris has released an EP of futuristic bass with a touch of french (and plenty of remixes). Out now on OWSLA, its kind of like digging through your parents’ Earth, Wind & Fire records with Skrillex and Koan Sound, in the future. Two free downloads and the full EP stream here.
