2009 was gnarly. MJ died. Obama was the cool black dude who got elected as president, but now everyone’s scratching their head wondering how he could be worse than the last bro, and this bass heavy genre of filth called dubstep kicked previous chart-topping bloghaus tracks to the curb. Here are some of my humble comments and selections from the year:
Biggest Dubstep ‘chune’ • Emalkay – When I Look At You
-Few songs deserve the title of being called mega. This track goes so far beyond it. Skream dropped it during a set in Miami and I seriously thought this was the end of music as we knew it as kids literally bum-rushed the stage. After Emalkay pushed back the release date a few months, DJs were frothing at the bit to finally have the tune at their fingertips.
- Honorable mention • Basement Jaxx ft. Sam Sparro – Feelings Gone (Rusko Remix)
Das Elektronic • Erol Alkan & Boys Noize – Waves
-While everyone and their brother either went mnml or wobble wobble, electronic gods Erol Alkan and Boys Noize stuck to their guns and produced a 9 minute epic. If you were a big time festival DJ in Europe worth your salt, you played this song.
Wobble Wobble • Jack Beats – Get Down (VIP Edit)
-This summer I was in LA and spent the entire month of July and into August counting down the days to see Jack Beats are Hardfest. Long story short, cops busted the joint down and I never got to see him. FAIL.
Club Track • Major Lazer – Pon de Floor
-Sure, we’ve all about had enough of this mayjah lazah song, but there is no denying how stoked you were the first few times you heard it out. If you told me that dancehall would be the biggest thing pon de charts since Justice, I would have told you to stop smoking so much reefer mon.
- honorable mention • Yeah Yeah Yeahs – Heads will roll out bro (A-Trak Remix)
MNML-TEK HAUS • Lazy Jay – Float My Boat (Pablo Decoder)
-I’m not gonna lie, my dad could probably produce a better ‘minimal’ song than most of the shit I hear these days (looking at you kid who just got ableton), but this Pablo Decoder track is massive.
Hottest Babe who can sing award • Ellie Goulding – Under the Sheets (Jeuce Rework)
If I was a chick I would be really envious of Miss Ellie Goulding. Her voice is too sexy. This Jeuce remix is my favorite out of the million floating around the blogosphere too (watch out for these UK kids next year)
So that about wraps up 2k9. Dub, disco, wobble and some cheeky stuff sprinkled in between. You could probably make a damn fine mix if you put them all together (food for thought) Anywho, here’s to more celebrities failing to realize that, yes, if you take too many drugs, you will die and people will mourn you via twitter (too soon??) Dance on into 2010 you dirty kids.
<3 troy kurtz!
Hey dirty dancers. This just popped into my inbox about an hour ago and I wanted to share it with you. The man with the phenomenal hair, known to you as Le Castle Vania, has just co-released his new track ‘Nobody Gets Out Alive’ on So Sweet Records and Always Never. A pretty hard track that I believe will be up most of your alleys (that kind of sounds dirty). So put on the headphones and get your blood pumpin’ it’s cooold outside!
