With my nice leather jacket fresh of the closet for the season, as well as more beanies than I can unapologetically admit to owning and wearing, it’s official: it’s getting cold. Now, don’t get me wrong, I’m a huge fan of fall & the things that come with it: rosy cheeks, cozy fireplaces, pumpkin or apple EVERYTHING, and so on, but there’s something I’ll always miss about the kiss of summer that kind of comes with being a california girl (damn you, Katy Perry..)

As the winter chill nips at our heels, it’s nice to reminisce about the warm days of summer, where being out in the sun inevitably leads to a happier disposition, more dance parties, and from a chemical perspective, an increase in your body’s production of eumelanin. Pretty much the stuff that your skin creates to protect your cells from getting their DNA damaged by the sunlight, since it’s pigmented a higher level of melanin would mean a darkened skin color. Viola, a tan!

Below are what I can laughably call my very own musical tanning-bed, your own little reminder of summer. Put on your favorite pool party ensemble, bust out the Jimmy Buffet Margaritaville Margarita Maker, and shake your booty to these sun-lovin, summer-drippin tunes.

Here’s something we welcome back with open arms: a brand new mixtape from Edwin van Cleef.  Although not as consistent in terms of frequency, Edwin van Cleef’s mixtapes are certainly right on par with the likes of The Magician and Aeroplane in terms of quality monthly mixtapes (some say better).  So anytime we can get our mitts on an EvC mix, our excitement levels are on high.

Earlier this year, EvC  gave an upgrade to his mixtape titles.  No longer does he simply name them after whatever current month he is in; he names his mixtapes after whichever favorite subgenres he is showcasing that particular month (subgenres which he totally doesn’t just make up, of course).  This month is his “Starmix”, which I can only imagine is a fusion of subgenres which primarily exist in the outer reaches of the cosmos and were first discovered at some alien discotech or perhaps some pool party on Venus.  It’s deep, atmospheric, galactic, funky spacehouse….or “Starmix”.

We’ve been waiting for this one for a while! This week at VS., we’re bringing on our good friends from the famed No Shirt/No Shoes events for a night of smooth jams and dreamy vibes. Coming off of a series of amazing pool parties at The Standard Hotel in Downtown Los Angeles this past summer, the trio of residents known as Tropicool, Bixel Boys, and Surf Ambassador Hendo made Nu Disco and Indie Dance readily available to Angelenos on a consistent basis, and now that summer is over, it’s time to move the boys inside at The Central in Santa Monica. As always, expect some great special guests to make an appearance this week as well.

The event will be FREE until 11PM this week w/ RSVP, so make sure to head over to DANCEiSM.com to get on the list!

The Whip have released their latest album, Wired Together, this month on Southern Fried Records, and I’m expecting a slew of remixes coming off of the 11-track LP in addition to the fantastic Alex Metric version of ‘Secret Weapon’ that we posted a few weeks ago as well as this out-of-the-norm rendition from Blue Satellite. After hearing Blue Satellite’s take on Edwin van Cleef’s latest single as well as a few other dreamier, funkier productions, this new remix came as a bit of a surprise to me. It incorporates some big time Electro elements illuminating that Blue Satellite can make any song and any genre his own.

By now, you should be familiar with the chilled-out space disco grooves of the GDD™ favorite, Edwin van Cleef. I am very pleased to see that he is continuing his monthly mixes with this sixth edition of the year that he comically categorized on Soundcloud as “Pillowfight Party Jams”. The combination of his vibrant, lighthearted style and tasteful track selection makes for a very danceable listening experience that will keep that summer sun shining even though the season is slowly coming to an end. Take full advantage of it while you still can and do so to the sounds of Edwin van Cleef!
