Toronto music maker Cyclist has become a master in the art of Disco. From classic Disco to Disco House, from Boogie to Funk, from sleazy Disco to sensual Disco, Cyclist knows how to craft a proper modern Disco track. On his latest remix of the song “Light Breaker” by Neighbour (featuring Piper Davis), Cyclist unleashes a barrage of big sounds ranging from a squelchy synth bass to heavy guitars to pounding funk drums. The result is a funky, dirty dose of cosmic chaos and another standout tune from our man Cyclist.
Like his fellow countryman Pat Lok or like English producer Clancy, Cyclist is an artist who is both well respected by his peers along with most popular dance music blogs. Like the aforementioned gentlemen, Cyclist’s production work is always of the highest quality. On his latest track, “Sunrise”, he teams up with Canadian chanteuse Maiko, their second collaboration (“Shine” was the first back in 2013). While certain dance fads may come and go, Cyclist defies labels & produces the type of music that will most certainly stand the test of time. And “Sunrise” is no exception. With its classic Disco Soul vocals & Deep Disco/Jazz fusion groove, “Sunrise” is the type of track that you never tire of. “Sunrise” should keep its place amongst your music collection for many Summers to come.
“OH MY GOD THAT’S THE FUNKY SHIT”
It’s not an easy task to take one of the baddest, grittiest, funkiest Beastie Boys tracks of all time & turn it into a balls out/tits out Disco classic. But, with a bassline that the late, great Mr. Adam Yauch would’ve been proud of, that’s exactly what Cyclist has done with the classic Beastie Boys track “Root Down”.
Never let you down with the stereo sound
Cyclist get on the mix & TURN IT OUT
On his latest remix, Cyclist gives us a glimpse of himself that we normally don’t get to see. On his remix of Joshua Collins’ track “To The End”, Cyclist shows off a love for 70s AM Rock with this magnificent six minute soft rock jam. It never hurts to embrace your inner Steely Dan or channel your stoner pals the Doobie Brothers as Cyclist does here, jamming like it’s the 70s & getting lost in the groove. Waaaaay cool, man.
While the new Cyclist remix of “Until the Dawn” by Rogue Vogue (feat. Patrick Baker) will certainly make you boogie & fill you full of 80s nostalgia, the track evokes a more specific 80s memory for me. Cyclist’s remix conjures up the persona of some of my favorite 80s anti-heroes & reminds me of all things that made me want to be like them when I was younger. They were the type of anti-heroes who armed themselves with self-deprecating humor & absurdity who somehow always managed to be the coolest person in the room. Ridiculous & witty, always managing to get the girl & solve the case. Acting a fool but playing it cool. Not an easy thing to do. The Cyclist remix of “Until the Dawn” evokes memories of movies that starred these type of anti-heroes. Movies (with underrated soundtracks) like “Fletch” or “Real Genius”. They were playful & upbeat yet somehow mysterious & seductive.
It’s difficult for me to accept the “this song has an 80s vibe to it” generalization and just leave it at that. Sometimes specificity (even if it’s something as absurd as comparing the song to a Chevy Chase film) is the only way to let someone know that a song brings out the 80s anti-hero in them.
Austin, TX artists S&M Music Company are getting ready to release their debut track “Walk Away”. Their label, Whiskey Pickle, describes the tune: “…’Walk Away’ is a slow burner that features Sam on vox and guitar while Mike lays down the keyboards, the bottom end, and offers his production talents. A stripped down bass and drum groove sets the frame work as chords build to a psychedelic boiling point with Sam’s echoed vocals bouncing around in a cavern of reverb. ”
Today we feature the perfect compliment to the original slow burner, Cyclist’s remix of “Walk Away”. Cyclist steers the song into party-jam mode adding a powerful, spacey disco feel to the original…another cosmic disco winner from our main man in Toronto, Cyclist.
