Nicotine. It’s that tiny chemical that millions crave, the stuff of multi-billion dollar industries fueled by cigarettes and nicorette packs. Many can’t get enough of the stuff, and from a chemical standpoint, it’s easy to see why. Acting mainly as a stimulant, nicotine has a boatload of effects on your nervous system, upping the release of quite a few chemicals in the body. By activating the mesolymbic pathway in the brain (what’s called the “reward system”), nicotine gives users a sense of euphoria and calmness. It also works to enhance alertness and sharpness, along with speeding up metabolism. Sounds great and everything, until you realize the strong addictive properties, difficulty with withdrawal, and potential cardiovascular problems that come with it.
Musical nicotine has all of the benefits of real nicotine without any of the bad stuff! Like people’s common reasons to smoke cigarettes, below are some songs that bring a sort of clear, calm euphoria with them, songs that you can sit outside and have a thought to, or songs you’re just notably addicted to, whether you like that you are or not. Put down your Marlboro’s, put on your headphones. Continue Reading
The multi-talented Toronto-based producer, Grandtheft, edited the Crystal Castles hit, “Not In Love,” with his own distinctive 808 touch. The previously up-beat original has been transformed into a satisfying groovy trap gem that will please those who are hungry for some heavy low-end kicks. Also, I’ve found that with the memorable vocals of the legendary Robert Smith (of The Cure), I can’t seem to stop listening to the track over and over. Enjoy after the jump. Continue Reading
Toronto duo, Crystal Castles, will be coming out with their third studio album in the following months on Fiction Records, and today we have been given a first taste of its sound with the first single, ‘Plague,’ which they’ve made available for free download on their Soundcloud. ‘Plague’ incorporates elements of Darkwave — utilizing Alice’s haunting vocals with Ethan’s epicly elevating synth leads. Although I wasn’t the biggest fan of Crystal Castles’ last album, I’m definitely interested in hearing the full length upon its release if ‘Plague’ is the touchstone for the rest of the production.
For those who are fans of Heartsrevolution & Crystal Castles, you might be familiar with the original glitch boy/girl duo Kap Bambino. Emerging from Bordeaux, this French duo has continuously built a cult following in the underground scene since getting together back in 2001. Notorious for fearless live performances, their unique take on electronic music is influenced by heavy metal, grunge pop, punk, new wave and… arcade games. Continue Reading
There’s something strikingly original about Toronto’s music that is heavily influenced by New Wave, Goth and Rave. The latest addition to this movement is Arts & Crafts synth-pop duo TRUST, formed by Maya Postepski (one-third of the band Austra) and Robert Alfons. Last month they debuted their first full-length album titled TRST , which is an all around solid production. Even though their sound is more introverted & cold-wave influenced, a comparison with Crystlal Castles must be made. Continue Reading
I feel silly for writing this, but please stay safe everyone. This has been a rough year for electronic music festivals worldwide and I hope the success of the HARD Summer Tour proves the naysayers wrong about the future of events like these.
