LA Legend Thee Mike B launched his new house-ego Brillstein earlier this year on Jesse Rose’s Play It Down label with the heavy-hitting EP Back To Bed. Filled with six tracks that perfectly capture Brillstein’s style of big, punchy house drums and hip-hop / old-school influences, the Back To Bed EP allowed for a ton of room and direction from the remix front. After Play It Down’s previous remix package (Jesse Rose’s The Whole Twelve Remixes) delivered tracks from legends and newcomers alike from all over the globe, the Play It Down vs Brillstein remix pack comes fully stacked with an all Play It Down roster. Of course label-head Jesse Rose kicks things off with his remix of “Meelo My Bro”, recent PID champion Christian Nielsen ends it with his “Je T’Adore” remix, and a few more of the label’s rotation of producers (namely Dansson, ZDS, Prince Club, and Sqim) each put their own spin on Brillstein’s tracks. It’s a wonderful showcase of how Jesse Rose, as A&R for the label, can curate such a mix of house and techno stylings while still remaining very within the Play It Down umbrella. Inevitably members of the label know how to make a track to groove to and it’s present as much as ever with the new remix package.
As a bonus, Brillstein’s fellow LA friend and producer Matpat had his way with Brillstein’s “Environmental Produce” which they’ve given to you for your downloading and listening pleasure. You can stream all six remixes below, buy them on Beatport HERE and instantly download the Matpat remix by clicking HERE.
Play It Down, the house music label from Jesse Rose, has been churning out records over the past year and a half, when Jesse decided to take his other label Made To Play a step back to give Play It Down some shine. Since then, we’ve seen one of the label’s most frequently released artists bud and blossom into quite the producer: Christian Nielsen. His latest work, the Late Check Out EP, follows through on his previous double sided release with tropical touches on infectious grooves.
It’s prime Ibiza season, which Christian definitely shows off in the title track, “Late Check Out.” Combining beachy horns with a deep and dark rolling bassline, this fits right in with the summer heat… whether you’re sweating at Cafe Mambo by the ocean or in the dark depths of a club. Carrying on, “Can You Hear Me?” is noticeably more light… this is definitely a track where you can see the sunlight while you’re dancing. And then with the flip of a switch, the closer track “Drongo” takes you back to the night time, heavy reverbs and synths that echo and tunnel between your ears taking over as the prominent driving forces in the track. Little bit of something for everyone here. A nice little variety pack from Christian, who’s definitely coming into his own as a producer and delivering solid pieces of music that will definitely get bodies moving from AM to PM and back again.
Next up from Jesse Rose‘s busiest imprint of 2013, Play It Down, is a two-track EP from a brand new name to the label: Christian Nielsen. Over the years Jesse Rose has not only had many secret or not-so-secret monikers of his own, from Alias Jonez to Black Rose (with the legend Henrik Schwarz), but also has released music from many friends and peers under different names.
Christian Nielsen is the latest name to add to this tradition, and with a little research I’m sure any fan could figure it out. But for now, we are left with the Shades EP, which contains two house-y tech-y club jams that with simple progressions are able to do some heavy-lifting in keeping the floor moving and the people dancing. ‘Push’ is the house-ier and stronger of the two tracks, and subtle layers and changes in the track make this a real ‘push’-er in a DJ set. ‘Slick’ is a little more uptempo, a little more techy, and after the 4:06 mark I’ll be damned if you don’t do the obligatory “WOOOOOO!!!!!” that happens when you’re witnessing the peak mark of a classic house/techno track.
Shades EP is out next week on Play It Down, but you can stream both tracks via their Soundcloud below.
