EDC Week, as it’s now called, has got to be one of the busiest weekends of the year in the City of Sin, and that’s why GDD™ has teamed up with our friends from Mandalay Bay’s new shining gem LIGHT to make your life just a little bit easier.

While it was a bit rainy and cold in Chicago for the midwest stop of Electric Daisy Carnival last month, it was still an absolute blast. We had the chance to see some great sets, including one from our friend Tittsworth who played the Bass Pod on that Saturday evening, and we’re happy to announce that he happened to record the entire thing and is sharing it with us all this morning. It’s been a whirlwind year so far for Sonny Moore, better known to dancefloors as Skrillex and now’s the time for his Essential Mix return. The L.A. everywhere-man first handed in a mix to Pete Tongback in 2011, and his second run has been eagerly-anticipated by fans (and let’s face it, the detractors too). His new studio mix includes new music from Dog Blood (his high-octane, rave-ready collaboration with Boys Noize), Knife Party, AC Slater, Alvin Risk and Skrillex himself. Then there’sDisclosure’s When A Fire Starts To Burn, HARD Events ringleader Destructo and much more going down. Check out the Soundcloud embed below.

While this Essential Mix sees Skrillex on his own, some of his biggest sets of 2013 – at Ultra Music Festival and Coachella – have been alongside Boys Noize as Dog Blood. The pair is also headed to Electric Daisy Carnival in Vegas this month. “For sure you can hear both of our styles, but really our intention is to create something new,” Alex Ridha told inthemix after Dog Blood’s first ever set at Ultra Music Festival Miami. “I don’t have a name for it. We went through every possible tempo, right up to 180 BPM.” Then there’s the yet-to-be-unveiled Diplo collaboration Jack U, which has the pair hitting the stage together for the first time in September as part of the 2013 Mad Decent Block Party tour.

During questions from the floor at the recent IMS Engage in Hollywood, Skrillex was asked about “the kickback” from an older generation of DJs and artists against his brand of dance music. “I think there’s so much criticism that’s great,” he told the room. “People love it, or they hate it. If you look at a painting in an art gallery, even if you hate it, at least it makes you feel something.

“You’ve got this new, loud, bombastic punk rock energy that’s coming in with electronic music, then you have the old-school techno, which comes from a different place and energy, even though it’s all electronic music. We’re all coming together – there wasn’t a Yuma tent [where underground house and techno names played] last year at Coachella, and now there is.”

Detroit Swindle start HIEST Recordings 

Detroit Swindle have announced details of their new label, HEIST Recordings.

The Dutch duo have spent the past 12 months DJing and performing their live show around the world, while notching up releases on Saints & Sonnets, Tsuba, Dirt Crew and Freerange in the process. The new imprint will launch on Monday, June 24th, with a two-track EP from Detroit Swindle entitled Break Up To Make Up. The label will be a platform for their own deep house fare, as well as that of “known and unknown artists that share their feel for dark, sweaty clubs.”

More Remi AlunaGeorge announce first-ever North American tour 

UK future-pop duo AlunaGeorge have announced their first-ever North American tour in support of their full-length debut, Body Music, due out July 29th via Island. “On the heels of our “American Hustle” EP – we are back with our boys Jaceo & Vedic – this time on Bitten Records with our ’313 (Detroit Calling)’ EP. Named after the city’s area code – lyrically the track is an homage to the city’s resilience in the face of constant hardships – to give birth to a musical genre and movement that has touched the lives of millions around the world.

The flip side – “212″ is not actually named after New York City’s dialing code as one might suspect – but is rather the temperature (in fahrenheit) that water turns from a liquid into a gas (pretty fucking hot). The words – courtesy of the one and only Ray Winstone – from the incredible film “Sexy Beast” – underscore that hot feeling we’ve all experienced in our favorite neighborhood ‘sweat on the walls’ nightclub. Ok so maybe it wasn’t 212 fahrenheit in the club – but you get the point!”

By now I am two full weeks into the Abelton Production Course offered through Point Blank Online. The first week touched on all of the core functions of Abelton, while this week focused more on the key features behind these functions. At the end of the week I had complete my first assignment and submitted it to my tutor. Two days later, much to my delight, I had a 16-minute personal video response along with an edited version of my Abelton project (check out the video below).

The second week’s lesson was a pleasant surprise to me as much of the information built upon and expanded my previous knowledge of the unique functions in Abelton Live. An interesting pattern I am beginning to notice is how the content of the course is delivered. Throughout the lessons 2/3 of the material explain the functions of the software while the remaining 1/3 focuses music production itself. In almost every video tutorial we observe our teacher making some form of music (House, Hip Hop, Drum & Bass, or Dubstep), but they use these genres as a way of demonstrating the multi-faceted functions in Abelton.

From my standpoint this is a huge strength in the course. Personal experimentation is extremely important in music production, but having a limited knowledge of the software used will certainly damper creativity. My main reason for taking this course was because I felt like I had hit a wall with my understanding of Abelton. In these past few weeks I have already seen an improved workflow and ability to experiment with Abelton Live.

As I mentioned above, last week I also got the first video (DVR) feedback on my first assignment. I didn’t know what to expect but was overall extremely pleased with the revisions my instructor made. The first assignment was to create a drum patter with 4-8 variations. There were strong points in my drum programming, but I overlook some very simple tools in Abelton that allow for cleaner sounds and drum patterns. The video feedback really solidified my first two weeks of lessons and brought a few more tips and tricks into my knowledge of production. Check it out above!

Andrés, Ejeca, and More Remix Romanthony’s “Ministry of Love” on New 12′s

It’s safe to say that nearly every fan of dance music has a memory associated with the voice and music of Romanthony (pictured above), whose talents were notably enlisted onDaft Punk‘s colossal hit “One More Time.” Prior to his work with the famed French duo, however, Romanthony (a.k.a. Anthony Moore) had already achieved wide recognition with a string of successful solo releases in the early- and mid-’90s. Before his tragic passing last month, Romanthony had finalized plans to issue a series of remixes for his 1995 classic“Ministry of Love,” and now, those tracks are set for release next week. Including productions from the likes of Detroit veteran Andrés, UK up-and-comer Ejeca, Berlin’sAndre Crom, and Glasgow Underground boss Kevin McKay, Ministry of Love 2013 will be available as two three-track 12″s on June 17 via Glasgow Underground. Bondax Announce North America Tour 

Bondax are set to return to North America next month following an announcement of a summer tour.

The 18-year-old Lancashire duo, who first travelled over the Atlantic last December, begin their chain of shows in Ontario, Canada on July 10.

Otherwise known as Adam Kaye and George Townsend, the sun-kissed house producers will also stop off in New York, San Francisco and Los Angeles throughout the nine date stint before the penultimate gig in Chicago.

Watch a short documentary about the Los Angeles beat scene, Featuring Daedelus and Co.fee

The Not A Beat, Not A Scene mini-doc includes contributions from an assortment of better (and lesser) known artists operating at the heart of L.A.’s beat scene. The star is dapper elder statesman Daedelus, who natters intelligently about the scene’s tentative first steps. Co. Fee, Free The Robots, Juj and Sir Froderick are among the other contributors. Discussions encompass the explosion of Low End Theory, L.A.’s status as the epicentre of psychedelic beats, and the “lackadaisical stoner aspect” of the city.

Las Vegas loves Techno at EDC afterparties 

Las Vegas has certainly turned into a domestic hotbed for EDM over the last few years, with massive clubs and outrageous residencies popping up all over the place. Hakkasan (MGM Grand Hotel’s five level club) alone has Deadmau5, Calvin Harris, Steve Aoki and Laidback Luke as residents.

Although the EDM scene in Sin City is flourishing, there has been a noticeable lack of underground talent…until now.

As part of Electric Daisy Carnival week in Las Vegas, LAVO and Marquee, will host an impressive ensemble of underground acts.

The party series, which is being branded by Insomniac as ‘Las Vegas <3′s Techno’, will feature five parties with quality bookings like Claude Von Stroke, Justin Martin, Cajmere, Carl Cox, John Digweed, Sasha, Dubfire and Umek all playing.

Are these bookings a sign that the underground sound has finally penetrated the glitzy Vegas crowd?
