Coming off a huge week of WMC/MMW and Ultra Music Fest, we return to LA to bring you a high energy VERSUS lineup that is sure to shake the west side. This thursday, the one and only Will Bailey will be making the US debut as his underground moniker LOW STEPPA. On top of that, his partner in crime (on the hugely supported moombah anthem ‘Ruckus’) Valentino Khan will be dropping a set, as well as techniquq mgmt / iheartradio’s Sam Hiller. Supporting the night will also be sets by Evan Koncan and Redbull’s Ryan Lassi.
Fresh off conquering the 50-date sold-out Mothership Tour, John Dadzie aka 12th Planet has returned home to Los Angeles to host the SMOG 5 Year Anniversary event. The lineup, topped by dubstep don Skream, is massive, filled with the entire SMOG label roster as well as secret guests that are sure to make this an event for the record books.
The real treat will be a special debut screening of 12th Planet: A Documentary. Directed by creative visionary and esteemed LMU-film graduate Mollie Tarlow, the film takes you over almost 2 years of the wild ride of 12th Planet on tour and subsequently the rising emergence of dubstep in America. It also features scenes from the top music festivals across the nation and appearances by some of the biggest names in dance music.
“SMOG, the dubstep record label that changed the American dubstep game (you could say even helped CREATE it), is celebrating its fifth year of existence, and it will be the birthday celebration to end all. Only five years ago, SMOG chiefs John Dadzie, Danny Johnson (head of Media Contender), and Drew Best ganged together in an effort to bring a new genre of music they felt so passionately about to the states. I think that I can speak for each of them when I say NOBODY knew that dubstep, the music few people knew about and even fewer were creating, would become what it is today. It’s been an incredibly exciting ride for everybody involved, and all along SMOG has been there shining the best light on one of the biggest rising genres in the music world today.” - Laura D,Media Contender
Detboi’s 2nd Album Curse Of The Drums Vol. 2 was recently been released on Herve’s label Cheap Thrills. It is a party box of very eclectic jams, and I couldn’t of described it better in one sentence than across the pond via UK BASS REVIEWS:
Detboi truly showcases his immense production talents with 9 tracks spanning a multitude of genres and styles, ranging from the deep jacking tech house grooves of ‘Partys Zipped Up’ to jazzy funky disco vibes of ‘Freaky Nights’ and touching bass on everything in between.
My personal favorite tracks on the album are ‘Party’s Zipped Up’ and ‘Pick It Up.’ ‘Party’s Zipped Up’ has a great midget house vibe, with tribal drums and bouncey samples that roll it along too well. ‘Pick It Up’ is a (Busta Rhymes) vocal led 2-step garage groove with an energetic bouncy acid bassline– perfect for those late ones. In its entirety, there’s something on this album for everyone and is truly a diverse reflection on all things DRUMS.
Our friends from Orange County, FiFiNASTY, are at it again after recently playing our VERSUS party, as well as Pacific Festival back in August. They just released a downloadable hour long mix that is packed exclusively with original productions. It’s an excellent listen that will take you through a dark & danceable journey with plenty of bass. Check it out and give back with a “like” on their Facebook page.
