Next Wave Records has been somewhat quiet for the past weeks, after a slurry of releases from Price Fox, Manilla Killa, Taches – to name a few. The latest is an hour-long mix from the label poster boy Jerry Folk. Titled his “Underground Favorites,” this mix features a selection of some mid-to-uptempo groovy house tracks. Very on point with his own productions, this one has Jerry Folk written all over it. It’s available for free download, so snag this one right now. Tracklist after the jump.
Los Angeles’ rising talent, Mister Blaqk, has been keeping the local scene healthy with his stand out DJ sets, and occasional parties like his mimosa-fueled FEELS brunch event a few weeks back. In true FEELS fashion, Mister Blaqk kicks off the tape with slower, smooth jams before masterfully building up the energy with a diverse array of groove-driven house, and other surprises littered throughout. Los Angeles is home to several world-class producers that are on the rise, but there are few that are shaping the sound of tomorrow with as much style and authenticity as Lonely Boy. Heralded as a “Funk conductor, eclectic savant, and master of good vibes,” this Desert Hearts & RollingTuff-affiliated house music maestro has quickly become a local favorite, while also seeing support for his cutting-edge productions from underground luminaries like Lee Burridge. For his guest mix, Lonely Boy brings us his set from a recent performance at Studio 5 After Hours, so it’s a perfect example of what he can do behind the decks in a live setting. Featuring Adana Twins, Justin Martin, Groove Armada, Pete Oak, Tanner Ross, one of Lonely Boy’s own forthcoming jams, “Don’t You Think“ (Out on Desert Hearts Records 1/27/15) and more, this mix is a must-listen for those down with the deeper side of house music.
One of last year’s breakout stars, Oliver Heldens, catapulted into the international spotlight as he helped shape the future house sub-genre, and things are only looking up for him in 2015. After dropping his single, “Last All Night (Koala)” via FFRR Records last month, he’s back with the release of Michael Calfan’s “Koala” remix, and his BBC Radio 1 Essential Mix. Calfan transformed “Koala” with piano-laden melodies, a new vocal sample, and revamped elements to make it his own club jam.
On top of the Calfan remix, Oliver offers up his BBC Radio 1 Essential Mix as an added bonus. The mix features a high-energy array of house music from the likes of Blonde, Don Diablo, Kaytranada, Zeds Dead, Chocolate Puma, and many more, so there’s a little something for everyone to get down with.
Our friends over at Main Course sure know how to pick ‘em. Fresco Crumbs is one of the newer up-and-coming acts in their camp, and has decided to kick off 2015 with a bang. His “Three Kings Mix” is an hour packed to the brim with a huge tracklist of Main Course sound. There is some exclusive unreleased material in this one, so be on the lookout for some gems. Look out for more Fresco Crumbs in the near future, but for now let the musical stylings of Astronomar, Skitzofrenix and more keep you bouncing for the next hour.
2014 was a pretty mental year for dance music, and it warms our hearts to see the sudden explosion of house music catching on here in America. With acts like Disclosure, Duke Dumont, and Clean Bandit getting Grammy nominations, it’s safe to say we’re in for a wild ride in 2015.
Here’s my 60 minute take on the last 12 months that features music from Oliver Heldens, Gorgon City, Maceo Plex and much more.
Best wishes in the new year!
