Pete Tong awarded MBE in New Year Honours List
Pete Tong has been awarded an MBE in the New Year Honours List for his services to music and broadcasting.
The veteran DJ, now 53, said he was “proud” to receive the honour, although he thought it was a prank when he first heard the news. He told the BBC: “I thought someone was joking when I first got the phone call. It’s an amazing, amazing thing. I’m very happy, I’m proud for my Mum actually, and what it means to her.”
In a statement, he thanked BBC Radio 1 and various club promoters he has worked with during his career. “I’d like to thank BBC 1 for it unerring commitment to dance and electronic music and for supporting and encouraging me for over two decades,” he said. “I’d like to thank all the club promoters in the UK and around the world for their passion and commitment to putting on amazing events and the artists, producers and DJs that have been making and innovating with the music.”
Tong first started DJing as a teenager in Dartford, later setting up club nights around Kent. He became well known presenting BBC Radio 1’s Essential Selection in 1991, and still has a Friday night show on the station. He was also a resident DJ at Ibiza’s Pacha between 2003 and 2007, and more recently, helped launch a dance and house show in the US on iHeartRadio’s Evolution station.
In 2004, however, he even had a film – ‘It’s All Gone Pete Tong’ – named after him and the rhyming slang phrase for something going wrong. Maybe now he has an MBE ‘It’s All Gone Pete Gong’ would be more better?

Preview Danny Daze’s EP on Ultramajic
The ‘Silicon’ EP sees the US born and Berlin residing Daze (pictured) tap into his love of classic electro and run with it on a release which is sure to go down a treat in the clubs.
Jimmy Edgar’s Ultramajic is still in its infancy as far as record labels go, but thanks to releases in 2013 from Aden, Creepy Autograph and Jimmy Edgar himself the label is now firmly on the radar of those who love their cutting edge electronic dance music.
The ‘Silicon’ EP is out on February 17 and can be previewed below.
