Electric Zoo Festival cancelled

Electric Zoo Festival has been cancelled amid reports of two deaths due to ecstasy overdoses.

The New York City EDM extravaganza began on Friday August 30, but after two festival goers died and another four were taken to hospital during Friday and Saturday’s events, it was decided by promoters and the Office of the Mayor that the event could no longer go on.

Despite the fact that “definitive causes of death” are yet to be determined, MDMA is said to be a factor in both deaths.

On the Electric Zoo website, the following statement has been made:

“The founders of Electric Zoo send our deepest condolences to the families of the two people who passed away this weekend. Because there is nothing more important to us than our patrons, we have decided in consultation with the New York City Parks Department that there will be no show today.”

The two deceased victims have been identified by the New York Daily News as Jeffrey Russ, 23, of Rochester, and Olivia Rotondo, 20, of Providence, R.I.

This edition of Electric Zoo marked the festival’s fifth year, and EDM heavyweights such as Armin van Buuren, Steve Aoki, and Laidback Luke were all set to headline today before the cancellation was publicly announced.

Donna Summer’s canon of classic hits are still loved today just as much as they were when they hit the shelves four decades ago, and now they are to receive the remix treatment from a varied set of knob twiddlers.

As you would probably expect, the list of contributors is a hit-and-miss affair, with mixes coming from BengaJacques Greene,Masters at WorkHot ChipAfrojack and more. Original Donna Summer collaborator and all-round nice bloke Giorgio Moroder‘s own rework of ‘Love to Love You Baby’ is also featured (the track got a drubbing from the FACT Singles Club not too long ago), and there’s also an unreleased Moroder/Summer track ‘La Dolce Vita’ spliced on at the end just for good measure.

Love To Love You Donna is due for release on October 22 via Verge Records.
