Some of my most cherished memories will always be the train rides I took throughout Europe in 1998 & how “Moon Safari” by AIR served as the soundtrack to my journey. It’s one of the many occassions in which Astralwerks Records has brought joy to my life. This week marks the 20th anniversary of Astralwerks, a label that helped pave the way for electronic music in America to become what it has today. Astralwerks’ partnerships with larger European labels in the late 90s/early 2000s were pioneering, bringing in acts like Chemical Brothers, Fatboy Slim & Basement Jaxx from across the pond & turning them into household names in the States. Astralwerks has been paramount for dance music in America & the label is still at the top of its game twenty years later.
No label has ever made me feel as cool as Astralwerks did in the late 90s throughout the early/mid 2000s. During that time, the label continued to assist in the soundtrack to my life, whether it was the sounds of “Melody A.M” by Royksopp being able to fit any mood I was in or Basement Jaxx albums “Remedy” & “Rooty” supplying endless beats for countless dance parties or The Kings of Convenience remix album soothing me with its ultra chilled out vibes. Astralwerks during that time was always there for me & will always have a special place in my heart. And for that, Astralwerks, I say thank you and a very Happy 20th Birthday from Gotta Dance Dirty!
