After first appearing in a brief video interview earlier this week, a more in-depth discussion with Moderat (a.k.a. Modeselektor and Apparat) has now surfaced. The new interview, courtesy of FACT TV, focuses on the way in which the three producers come together to form Moderat, revealing glimpses of the ultimate failures and triumphs encountered by the group during the making of II, its forthcoming sophomore LP. SFX Entertainment reveals plans to acquire Stereosonic
“I’m not looking to do a hundred festivals,” Shelly Finkel, the head of Robert F.X. Sillerman’s SFX acquisitions, told the room at the IMS Engage conference in April. “We’re going to have a handful of the best and improve on them each year.”
Now it has been revealed that one of those festivals in the ‘best of the best’ camp is Australia’s own summer giant, Stereosonic. After pledging to spend $1-billion on acquisitions within a year, SFX Entertainment is planning to add the company behind Stereosonic, Totem, to its portfolio. SFX’s IPO filing is public, and includes the following section on Totem.
“We have entered into an asset contribution agreement with Totem, under which we have agreed to pay AUD$75.0 million, consisting of AUD$60.0 million (or $55.3 million) in cash and AUD$15.0 million (or $13.8 million) in shares of our common stock at the price to the public in this offering, to acquire 100% of Totem. Under the terms of the agreement, we were obligated to pay an AUD$5.0 million (or $4.8 million as of May 22, 2013) deposit, which we funded on May 22, 2013.”
The revelation of the prospective SFX-Totem deal comes just a week out from the announcement of 2013’s Stereosonic line-up. To celebrate its fifth birthday, the festival is expanding to two days in each city. Along with the change in format, the festival is promising “the greatest EDM line-up Australia has ever seen” with “headline acts that have never before shared the stage”.
SFX is adding to its already-formidable roster of holdings in the U.S., which include Beatport, Disco Donnie Presents and Life in Color. In March, after much speculation, Dutch powerhouse ID&T also became part of SFX. According to the IPO filing, the company plans to acquire a 60-percent stake in German events company i-Motion GmbH, which produces Nature One, Mayday and Ruhr-in-Love. SFX is also taking on a 70-percent share of Made Event — the company behind Electric Zoo and New York’s summer events on Governor’s and Randall’s Islands.
