Move over MJ: Calvin Harris sets new UK chart record
As a typically wry Tweet from Calvin Harris points out, Michael Jackson may be regarded the King Of Pop, but what did he know about side-chaining? This week, Harris became a record-holder in the UK, earning eight chart hits from the one album. The most recent blockbuster song to fall into line from his LP 18 Months is Need Your Love, featuring Ellie Goulding.
The album’s parade of Top Ten singles started back in June 2011 with Bounce (peaking at No. 2), followed by Feel So Close (No. 2), We Found Love with Rihanna (No. 1), Let’s Go (No. 2), We’ll Be Coming Back (No. 2), Sweet Nothing with Florence Welch (No. 1) and Drinking From The Bottle (No. 5). With the Ellie Goulding single, Harris pips Michael Jackson, whose albums Bad and Dangerouseach featured seven UK Top Ten singles. It seems the 18 Months approach – bundling up past glories alongside newer material on one tracklist – was a savvy move.
Harris will be celebrating his dream run over the coming months with a new residency at Las Vegas mega-club Hakkasan. Over the Northern summer, he’s also ticking off appearances at Amnesia in Ibiza and festival slots at Jay-Z’s Made In America, Balaton Sound, V Festival, T In The Park and Wireless.
Speaking to Music Radar last year, the producer recalled how he started out, in the early days before he was pop’s go-to guy. “Right at the start, when I was about 13 or 14, I only had an Amiga 500 Plus running a bit of tracker software called OctaMED. My brother was big into his computers and, when he moved up to a proper PC, I took charge of the Amiga. With the right interface, you could sample things off CD, so I used to nick loads of loops from Fatboy Slim albums and make my own tunes.”
Mysteryland turns 20 with bumper 2013 line-up
In the calm before the storm of another Northern summer, enduring one-day festival behemoth Mysteryland has announced its 2013 line-up for its 20th edition. Leading the mainstage on August 24 2013 are tried-and-true names like Steve Aoki, Steve Angello and Fedde Le Grand, with a prime slot for hometown hero Joris Voorn. There are 13 unique, purpose-built stages overall. This being a Dutch-made festival from the ID&T camp, the Q-dance arena is sure to be a major drawcard, then there’s the Dirty Dutch Big Top with the likes of Chuckie, Dirty South and Flosstradamus, a Resist stage with a line-up of bass fiends, and house and techno at every corner of the site.
In 2012, inthemix’s Angus Paterson trekked out to the rolling hills of the Voormalig Floriade, just outside of Amsterdam, to experience Mysteryland: “While ID&T has stolen its own thunder in recent years when it comes to hype, due to the sheer excess of Tomorrowland in Belgium, Mysteryland is still the spiritual parent of that festival. Though as it turns out, it’s a completely different event, and a markedly more ‘adult’ one. 2012 marked the 19th year Mysteryland took place just outside of Amsterdam, and you could certainly feel its heritage on the day, with the age of attendees stretching from early 20s right through to 50s and even 60s. You got the sense it’s an authentic Dutch cultural event; a party that trades excess for style, while still pulling out all the stops to create a genuine fantasy world.”

Boards of Canada’s surprise single appears in Rough Trade East
A second copy of Boards of Canada‘s surprise Record Store Day single has appeared in London shop Rough Trade.
The 12-inch, released through Warp Records, first appeared in New York record store Other Music over the weekend. A Twitter post from Rough Trade revealed that a copy of the record, which had apparently “stood in the racks for a couple of days,” had just been sold to a customer at its East London shop.
The record contains a brief snippet of music and a robotic voice that reads the numbers “9-3-6-5-5-7.” The sleeve reads: “—— / —— / —— / XXXXXX / —— / ——,” which suggests the single may be the first part in a series of releases. It is the duo’s first official release since 2006’s Trans Canada Highway.

Zomby to Release Double-Disc Album via 4AD; Hear Another New Track
Controversial musical figure and tireless internet firebrand Zomby has announced that his next album will be a double-disc offering called With Love, which is set to arrive this summer via 4AD. The anonymous artist’s new record comprises 33 tracks spread across two CDs or three LPs (an increasing trend, it would seem), and is said to “move seamlessly between the dancefloor and after-hours emotional introspection, serving as a love letter to the soulful dance music of his past.” Though no tracklist was released with Zomby’s announcement, he did share the album’s artwork (above) and one of its never-before-heard tunes, the booming and eerie “Soliloquy.” “W I T H L O V E,” a track whichappeared online at the beginning of this month, is expected to be on the album, too. Before Zomby releases his new record on June 18, “Soliloquy” can be streamed in the player below.
