City of Miami allows two weekends of Ultra
The City of Miami has allowed Ultra Music Festival to be held across two weekends in March.
The fate of the festival was put on the line when local business owners complained about the event doubling in size in 2013. The local government then proposed a resolution to slash it in half.
A meeting at City Hall in Miami was held today to decide an outcome, with the dance music community holding its breath over the result.
Good news awaited fans, however. The City of Miami has withdrawn its resolution, giving Ultra the go-ahead this year. Though there are two conditions: that Ultra pay $500,000 to the City and that its 2013 edition is a “pilot” of the new two-weekend format.
The fee will go toward policing the event and the “pilot” scheme means that if Ultra were to be held for the same length of time in 2014, it would have to apply to the City for permission.
This is a huge turnaround for Ultra. The festival has already begun selling tickets for two weekends worth of events and has also just announced a huge line-up.
This is despite Mayor Tomás Regalado telling the Miami Herald yesterday: “Personally, I think one weekend is enough… We understand that we have to accommodate all festivals, but two weekends with street closures would collapse downtown. Plus, people complain about the kids.”
More when we have it.
Boiler Room x House of Vans Party
Boiler Room Berlin has announced a very special event in conjunction with Vans.
Taking place in Fashion Week in one of Berlin’s most mysterious buildings, live music streaming platform Boiler Room promises to transform an abandoned nineteenth century swimming pool into a modern day rave.
German legends Boys Noize (above) and Modeselektor are joined in the House of Vans by Brodinski, Gesaffelstein and Hercules & Love Affair.
The event can be streamed live on the January 16 from Boiler Room TV.
Dubfire and Adam Beyer to make NYC club debuts
The grand reopening of Marquee in NYC has been a major concern among New York City clubbing faithfuls for quite some time and it appears that it will finally happen. Friday nights in 2013 will be stacked with some of the finest underground bookings and Friday January 18 will see Dubfire play what is sure to be a noteworthy set for the grand reopening of the club.
The Grammy-nominated producer and his last two efforts to play in NYC have been unsuccessful (promoter and club issues), so you can be sure the SCI + TEC boss is going to play a long and hard set of chrome-black techno. Get tickets to this event here.
Pacha is a worldwide club brand that has been synonymous with quality bookings since its inception. There are few underground DJs that would warrant a headlining gig in the Pacha main room, but Adam Beyer is amongst that elite class of DJs. The Drumcode head will make his long awaited debut at the NYC super club on Saturday January 19. Expect an extended set of mind-blowing techno from one of Sweden’s finest dance music exports. Get tickets to this event here.
Anyone see a trend? Could 2013 be the year of techno in New York City?

Lapalux gets Nostalchic
Lapalux’s debut album, Nostalchic is due out on Brainfeeder in late March.
Nostalchic follows a pair of EPs for Brainfeeder from the 25-year-old British producer, real name Stuart Howard, who was signed after Flying Lotus personally responded to an email Howard had sent the label. (He’s the imprint’s sole British signing.) As the title suggests, the album plays sonically with the idea of nostalgia and features Lapalux’s signature mix of house, hip-hop and R&B. A number of vocalists feature across the album’s 12 tracks, including Jenna Andrews and Kerry Leatham.
Have a listen to the album’s first single, “Guuurl,” over at Soundcloud.
