GDD™ Guest Mix + Interview: Cyril Hahn

stippled-photo

Cyril Hahn has been massively circling the realms of the internet these past few weeks, and with his ultra-sexy takes on R&B tunes and his compelling and slow-driven mixes, it comes as no surprise. After Annie Mac dropped his remix of Destiny’s Child’s “Say My Name” on BBC1, the fire quickly spread, with well over 400,000 plays currently on his SoundCloud link for that track alone. With the surge of steamy and provocative sounds being pushed by plenty of artists these days, Cyril Hahn is geared for a very promising future.

So here we are. For this week’s GDD™ mix series, I decided to nab the young Canadian producer for a nice little mix & interview. With an air of mystery and a scarily-good stream of remixes out, I am both intrigued and excited for what’s to come from Cyril. As the days start to get colder, I can only hope things get steamier :) But for now, I hope you all enjoy the s-l-o-w-e-d and sensual mix as much as I am, sip slow baby, sip slow.

Interview & Tracklist after the jump!

Hi Cyril! How are you, what have you been up to this week?

Hi there! I’m doing great thanks! It’s been a pretty busy week. Went to my classes, wrote some exams, prepared for my show with Holy Other here in Vancouver which ended up being a great night, had a nice thanksgiving dinner, worked on the mixtape for you guys which was a lot of fun… oh and I made lots of soup since it’s getting colder here.

I believe you’ve mentioned when you were younger you “hated” dance music. Was there a moment, a song, an artist that changed your mind?

I think it was more of a slow transition. When I was growing up I only listened to punk & hardcore and was fairly narrow minded in terms of other types of music. Then slowly I started appreciating folk, post-rock, hip hop, ambient and electronic stuff. I can’t think of a specific moment but it was probably musicians like The Field or Caribou which really made me appreciate steady kick drums.

Most of your remixes getting a lot of hype are of R&B tracks. Is there a particular R&B artist you’d like to work with, or one you’re hoping to hop on a remix for?

I think when it comes down to it, I’d really like to work with somebody who pushes the boundaries of R&B and is not scared to try new things. Tom Krell (aka How to Dress Well) would definitely be somebody on the top of my list.

Anything you gotta have with you while you’re in the studio? Something you wish you had with you in the studio?

I don’t really need much. I produce all my songs at home. My set up is very basic. A laptop, a midi interface and headphones. I’m a sucker for old synths and use a lot of synth VSTs since I couldn’t really afford good hardware equipment when I started out. I also love 80s drum machine samples so they have to be with me at all times. Give me a cup of coffee during the day and a tea at night and I’m set.

Favorite records and artists of the year so far?

Oh man, there’s so many. I’m just gonna list what pops into my head first and try and keep it short… Evian Christ, Shlohmo, Holy Other, Disclosure, Bicep, Knxwledge, Twin Shadow, How to Dress Well, Grimes, Lotus Plaza, Lapalux, Teebs, Ryan Hemsworth, Fort Romeau, DIIV.

Favorite thing about Canada? Least favorite thing?

Favorite thing: Just all the great people I’ve met over the years here. I came here when I was 19 and didn’t really know anybody. Now it’s become my new home.
Least favorite thing: Good cheese is way to expensive here…

What’s up next?

I have a few shows here in Vancouver coming up. Also working on some official remixes. Ultimately though, I really wanna have some solid originals ready next year.

Lastly (GDD tradition), what’s your drink of choice? First one in LA is on us.

Beer. Hands down. A pilsner or an amber ale and I’m golden.
