Round two of Science Sundays is already upon us and what better chemical to bring into the mix than the first one I put in my body this morning? Don’t get any of the wrong ideas guys… just caffeine. There are few things I delight in more (slash find absolutely necessary to have in my life every day) than a joyous cup of coffee, and that in large part is due to its caffeine content. Caffeine, for all you terminology nerds, is a xanthine alkaloid that acts as a acetylcholinesterase inhibitor. OK, so that basically means it’s a stimulant. It perks you up, helps keep you clear and focused, and if you’re anything like me after three cappuccinos, can make you jittery and energetic.
So there we have it. Below are a few songs I enjoy, ones that I find help me wake up in the morning, put my head in a nice and clear space, keep me tapping my feet in my desk chair, and ward off any yawns or feelings of exhaustion of the moment. So if you’re feeling a little groggy on Monday morning, or start slowing down at work in the afternoon, fill up your favorite mug and press play. I promise you’ll be right as rain in no time.
Dark Sky – Tremor
Call me crazy but in my head I see a cute little coffee maker doing the harlem shake to this song and perculating away. And on a more obvious note…. excess caffeine can cause tremors. PURCHASE
James Blake – CMYK
I don’t know how James Blake does it, but somehow any time I listen to this song, I feel re-energized, re-focused, and generally if I’m in a sour mood when I wake up this will snap me right out of it. Oh yeah, and it samples Aaliyah which is one of the few things in life I love more than caffeine. PURCHASE
Solo – Home Is Where It Hurts (ft. Syron)
OMG, this song. It’s amazing and will wake you right out of whatever slump you’re in. Huge ups to both Syron and the handsome Solo for combining ultra depressing lyrics with such an upbeat and catchy melody. I posted the music video for you all to watch for (cough… wink ;D) obvious reasons. PURCHASE
Rustie – Ultra Thizz
The ultimate pick me up. The bonafide, undeniable perk of a track that can only be done by the one and only Rustie. PURCHASE
Shlohmo – Wen Uuu (Salva Remix)
Salva may or may not have first caught your ear with the wildly popular remix he did with RL Grime of Mercy, but this track really (I feel) shows Salva’s depth of knowledge with structuring sounds into a solid song. Definitely on the playlist of the coffee shop in my mind. PURCHASE
Tinashe – Boss (Ryan Hemsworth Remix)
It always takes a second to readjust from a slump, whether waking up from a nap, settling into the office in the morning, recovering from a hangover, whatever, and this is the perfect song to get you in the right vibe. DOWNLOAD
!!!BONUS!!! Justin Martin – Crackcast 019 Mix
Probably better than caffeine at getting you going. One of my favorite mixes this year. Boom.
