I Love Techno drops 2012 festival lineup
By now, we know that Belgium’s I Love Techno festival isn’t really beholden to the one genre ‘love’ anymore, instead branching out to include more electro, dubstep and house in its line-up year-on-year. True to that, we’ve just been given I Love Techno’s 2012 lineup and this time ‘round, there’s a particularly wide range of sounds heading to Flanders Expo Hall.
Leading the charge is German maestro Boys Noize, who’s packing a new live show to go with the new album he’s got due out in October. He’s joined by longtime pal Erol Alkan, French techno legend Vitalic and Canadian tastemaker Tiga. At the fore of the dubstep contingent are Benga, Neroand Flux Pavilion (to name just a few of the bass-y names on the bill), and punters can also expect Gallic wonder Gesaffelstein, Fool’s Gold head A-Trak and German dudes Modeselektor. As for the rest? There’s Flying Lotus, Jamie xx, Chris Liebing and Major Lazer, and that’s not the half of it. For €56 a ticket, you definitely can’t complain.
The mixing honours for this year’s I Love Techno release have gone to Erol Alkan, who’s selected cuts from Gesaffelstein, Para One and his own recent collaboration with Switch as part of the tracklist. Alkan’s mix is due for release in October, while the festival itself will go down on November 10.

Breakbot readies debut album for Ed Banger
Thibaut Berland, better known as Breakbot, will release his first artist album in September.
By Your Side will continue Berland’s run of releases on Ed Banger Records, the well-known Parisian label that’s also home to Justice, SebAstian and the late DJ Mehdi. Though he generally fits the Ed Banger mold, Berland takes a less banging approach than most of his label-mates, opting instead for a silky, pop-inspired sound that reflects his biggest influences: Michael Jackson, Prince, Stevie Wonder and Phil Collins among others. This continues on his debut LP.
“I guess you could say my album is more a pop album than a Berlin techno record with water drop sounds in it,” he says. “I wanted to make a pop journey that would have all my influences, without being a reference catalog.”
By Your Side features mostly new tracks, plus selections from Beland’s recent singles, Fantasy and One Out Of Two. You can hear a bit of the latter track in the teaser trailer below.
01. Break Of Dawn
02. Fantasy Feat Ruckazoid
03. One Out Of Two feat Irfane
04. By Your Side Part 1 feat Pacific!
05. By Your Side Part 2 feat Pacific!
06. You Should Know feat Ruckazoid
07. The Mayfly and The Light feat Irfane
09. Easy Fraction
10. Baby I’m Yours feat Irfane
11. Another Dawn feat Irfane
12. Why Feat Ruckazoid
13. A Mile Away feat Irfane
Ed Banger will release By Your Side on September 28th, 2012.

Beats Antique announce Contraption Vol. 2 and Fall tour
Growing like wildfire under the canopy of live electronica and experimental world fusion music, the acclaimed musical trio Beats Antique launch their fall tour to finish out 2012 in support of their upcoming release,Contraption Vol. 2, a new cinematic, orchestral, and seductively bass heavy EP.
As the trio masterfully merges modern technology, live instrumentation, brass bands, string quartets, glitch, and dubstep, Beats Antique’s highly anticipated new album explores another octave of musings first begun in 2007 with Tribal Derivations. Five years, four albums and two EPs later, Contraption Vol. 2 – will arrive on Tue 9.18.12 – to round out the collection of over 80 songs released.
Beats Antique will inspire their fans with a raw, animalistic musical event that blurs the lines between the provocative, the spiritual, and the artistic while still maintaining allegiance to the muses of class, beauty. The tour, “Animale Mechanique”, will cover 35 locations in North America and end with a once-in-a lifetime show in front of The Pyramids in Egypt on the Winter Solstice.
Having already enchanted audiences at Coachella, Lollapalooza, Bonnaroo, Red Rocks and beyond, Beats Antique’s performances blend electro-acoustic breakbeats set to a Bollywood bass-circus stage show, with the sophistication of top hats receding to a sea of animal masks and wild feather headdresses. Their ability to create a balance between artist and audience even before the curtain rises creates a total escape both through live performance and the album experience that leaves critics and fans reeling alike.
Consider “Allure,” the opening track on Contraption Vol. 2 – you are instantly transplanted to an Art Nouveau Speakeasy. The truth in the music is told as the acoustic and electronic indulge in one another until they can’t be told apart. This is best observed after listening to the purely acoustic, Doo Wap inspired “Crooked Muse”, featuring the soulful voice and songwriting of long-time collaborator, LYNX
The journey that led to Beats Antique was a winding and twisted path from the West Coast and eclectic underground of San Francisco’s performance art scene, to the ancient trade routes of the silk road. In this modern incarnation, the musical alliance of producers David Satori and Tommy Cappel is inspired and emphasized by their collaborative partnership with world-renowned belly dance performer and music producer Zoe Jakes.
David Satori studied at California Institute of the Arts and Tommy Cappel studied at Berkeley School of Music before they ventured to locations such as Bali, West Africa, and Serbia. With extensive backgrounds in multicultural music production, and the passports to prove it, Satori and Cappel command the spectrum of live and digital instrumentation with skills born from Traditional Folk to Hip Hop and old school Jazz.Zoe Jakes adds a third dimension as the diverse and disciplinary dance counterpart to Beats Antique’s sound. Jakes has worked with two major dance troupes, including Miles Copeland’s Bellydance Superstars and Rachel Brice’s Indigo Belly Dance Company, and is a student of ballet and contemporary techniques.
Beats Antique is best imagined as an innovative creature built from the cumulative heritage of the world’s music chasing its tail. However vivid that image, when a marching band groove crashes into bluesy folk chords only to be accompanied by glitchy electronic beats and Middle Eastern melodies, you’ll still be surprised and taken to a place you hadn’t previously known existed.
