David Guetta on his detractors: “F*ck them”
No matter what David Guetta does, it’s going to be divisive. With prime placement amongst dance music’s top-earners and a staggering 34 million fans on Facebook, the DJ is not the first guy you’d expect to “hijack the system”. Regardless, that was the motto that went with Guetta’s show this week in London: a ‘secret’ party in a warehouse-style space presented by Burn energy drinks, a Coca Cola product. The event was a collaboration with Paris-born, Los Angeles-based street artist Mr Brainwash (the subject of Banksy’s Exit Through The Gift Shop documentary), who gave the venue its look. He’s also set to direct the music video for the Guetta/Nicky Romero hook-up Metropolis. Mr Brainwash’s real name is Thierry Guetta, but the pair is not related.
A corporate-sponsored night that was all about celebrating dance music’s DIY roots pretty accurately sums up the paradoxes of David Guetta. However, as picked up by Mixmag and other UK outlets, before his set the Frenchman gave short shrift to the critics who berate him for diluting dance music and selling out. “I would say fuck them,” he said. “I come from that scene. When I started making music I was only about 11-years-old, the reason I was underground was because I didn’t have a choice. If I think my music is amazing, why would I not want to share it with more people? I think people are really narrow-minded. Why shouldn’t I be sharing my music with the world? We need to keep this music going for ourselves.”
The London party, which featured a surprise appearance from Nicky Romero, was advertised as David Guetta going back to his roots. “In the beginning of the ‘90s, I was organising raves,” he says in the video below. “We used to give a phone number, and say, meet you at eight [pm] at this place. I would put the soundsystem and lights in a tunnel under construction. We would bring 2,000, 3,000 people; this is where I’m coming from.”

Above & Beyond: Is the EDM Bubble About to Burst?
The explosion of EDM in America and all over the world is undeniable. It’s created a love or loathe effect within the dance music scene and is dividing the opinions of fans and DJs across the globe.
In an exclusive interview with Mixmag, Above & Beyond expressed their concerns about the state of commercial dance music and the effect it is having on dancefloors across America.
Jono from Above & Beyond talked about his experiences of EDM in Las Vegas and how he sees the growing genre: “The bubble in America is gonna burst. It’s got to the stage where it’s all about what we call The Playlist. There are about 12 records that these DJs are playing. They may play their own music in their sets around the world but when they come to Vegas, it’s a case of sticking to The Playlist. It’s a bit cynical really.”
The dance music legend went on to talk about the experience that club goers are looking for in a night and how it may not be exactly what they are expecting due to artists seeming to be more concerned with the table & mainstream crowd and keeping promoters happy rather than their long term fans.
“In the process they lose all their identity. As an artist, you hope that people come to see you for your art, not just to hear the Top 10. A club could hire almost anyone to do that job” he said.

Amon Tobin Brings ISAM 2.0 to North America
Amon Tobin will embark on a tour of North America with a reworked version of his ISAM show this fall.
The Brazilian-born artist released his latest album ISAM last year, which saw him further exploring field recording techniques, “crafting entire synthetic instruments from slivers of incidental sound” as our review put it. The album was complemented by a worldwide tour that saw Tobin couched in a large-scale stage installation (pictured right) with elaborate video-mapped projections to match the music. ISAM made appearances at Sonar, Coachella and clubs across Australia among other places. This autumn he’ll bring the show on another North American tour with what he’s calling ISAM Live 2.0.
This second version of the show will feature new aural and visual components, including new material from his Two Fingers project, which will release a new albumcalled Fools Rhythm in October. The tour will see him criss-cross the US, hitting both coasts as well as midwestern and southern dates, beginning September 1st in Seattle, ending in Los Angeles on October 12th, with one Canadian stop in Toronto on September 10th. No word yet on opening acts.
