Avicii Working On “New Live Show”

Now that dance music is raking in the big bucks Stateside, legacy US trade magazineForbes is starting to take notice. Already we’ve seen the publication crunch the numbers on why Brazil “has become one of the meccas of electronic music”, and now they’ve launched an interview series dubiously titled ‘The World’s Greatest DJs’. First in line is fresh-faced Swede Avicii (we doubt he would count himself as one of the world’s greatest DJs, but whatever), who fielded some questions this week about his influences, the touring life and why America’s going mad for arena-sized dance music.

“I started listening to a lot of Daft Punk, way before I knew what house music was, and then progressed in to a lot of Steve AngelloEric PrydzAxwellSebastian Ingrosso andLaidback Luke,” Tim Bergling told Forbes. “They all influenced me a lot and listening to them taught me so much, everything from the basics of how to arrange a track to chords and scales, which ended up making my sound what it is today.”

He also told the interviewer that he’s “working on a couple of things”, including a “new live show”. We’re guessing that means a flashy stage production in the style we wrote about recently rather than a three-piece band playing Levels. Avicii is set to co-headline the second day of Ultra Music Festival this month – his highest North American billing to date – so he could be unveiling his “new live” thing there.

Get Ready to Womp: Lightning in a Bottle Announces Musical Lineup

Fans of deep-bass electronica are rejoicing with today’s announcement of the musical lineup for the seventh annual Lightning in a Bottle Music and Arts Festival. Headliners at the Memorial Day weekend event at Silverado, Calif.’s Oak Canyon Ranch include Bassnectar and The Glitch Mob.

Both of these acts first appeared at LiB in 2007, and in the past five years, each has emerged from California’s musical underground to become a nationally recognized name in the rapidly expanding electronic music scene. As such, Lightning in a Bottle has established itself as a breeding ground for up and coming electronic music, and for west coast talent in particular.

LiB’s 2012 lineup also includes electro-underground players Apparat, Eoto, Bluetech, Tipper, Big Gigantic, Random Rab and the L.A.-based vaudeville troupe the Lucent Dossier Experience. First-time headliners include English “psychedelic downtempo music project” Shpongle and hip-hop MC Gramatik.

In addition to the music, Lightning in a Bottle features a long weekend’s worth of yoga classes, live art, lectures and workshops on topics ranging from composting to Qi Jong, making it one of the most eco/social-conscious events on the festival circuit. The specifics of this programming will be announced by event organizers The Do LaB in the next few weeks.

“We’re proud to bring this community of musicians and friends back together again for its biggest, most realized vision of music, consciousness, and sustainability efforts in the hills of Southern California,” said Do LaB co-founder Jesse Flemming.

Lightning in a Bottle 2012 will take place on Memorial Day weekend, May 24-28. Additional information and tickets, (which sold out last year, just sayin’), are available on the festival’s website.

Goldenvoice takes over Hollywood’s Music Box; it’s now the Fonda

When the Music Box in Hollywood was abruptly shuttered in early January, local promoter Goldenvoice promised that it would be a “short-term” closure. The masterminds of the Coachella festival in Indio, Calif., on Tuesday officially revealed that they were taking over the venue’s lease and that they would immediately resume promoting concerts at the space.

The venue was closed in January after the leasees were evicted, but details were scant. According to sources involved with the venue, Music Box operator Thaddeus Smith reportedly was evicted after he violated  terms of his lease when some of his business partnerships changed. Smith did not return numerous emails from Pop & Hiss.

It had long been assumed that Goldenvoice would take control of the 1,300-capacity venue. Even while the the theater was closed, the promoter continued to announce concerts at the space.  In early March, Goldenvoice announced numerous Coachella-related concerts at the venue, now known as the Fonda Theater, including Kasabian (April 17) and Manchester Orchestra (April 16).

Tickets are currently on sale for upcoming shows such as Nada Surf (March 20), Esperanza Spalding (April 27) and Mogwai (June 2). The first show currently on the docket is electronic act Feed Me on March 17.

Morillo, Choo Choo & Nunez To Form ‘Supergroup’

Erick Morillo, Harry “Choo Choo” Romero and Jose Nunez are set to combine forces to form super group, Sympho Nympho.

The Subliminal Records camp will be taking over Miami Music Week as the three DJs unleash their Sympho Nympho collaboration with an exclusive live performance at Subliminal Session at Amnesia along with the release of their brand new mix compilation, ‘The Beginning’ on March 20.

Nôze member Nicolas Sfintescu has mixed Body Language Vol. 11, due for release in May on Get Physical MusicNôze are the wine-guzzling, fedora-wearing, raspy-voiced duo behind cabaret-tinged house tracks like “Dance Avec Moi” and “Meet Me in the Toilet.” Though they’re best known as a live duo, Sfintescu DJs as well, and makes his official mix CD debut with Body Language Vol. 11. He says the mix has the same off-beat flair that Nôze are known for: “If we release a compilation that has Nôze’s name on it, it’s not to put in there all the summer hits. It has to match what we want to do and say with our music.” In addition to selections from like-minded artists such as Nicolas Jaar and dOP, the compilation includes a track from Hemingway, Nôze’s new project with the drummer Emiliano Turi. Luciano & Lenny Kravitz billed for Ibiza 123 Rocktronic

Details have been revealed for a new three-day event in Ibiza called Ibiza 123 Rocktronic Festival.

As its name suggests, the festival is all about fusion between rock and electronic acts. Big name DJs make up half the bill so far, namely AxwellFatboy SlimDavid Guettaand Tiesto. The other half is devoted to live bands, electronic live acts and rare collaborations, including Sting, Tinie Tempah and 2 Many DJs (playing live).Luciano appears on the bill twice—once as a DJ, and once playing live with pop-rock veteran Lenny Kravitz. How exactly that one will work is anyone’s guess at this point.

The festival is a collaboration between some of the biggest players in Ibiza’s club scene—Pete Tong, the BBC Radio 1 host and IMS co-founder, and Danny Whittle, Pacha’s international director—plus Pino Sagliocco, the chairman of Live Nation, the large-scale events promoter that has roots in Clear Channel and merged with Ticketmaster in 2010. It will be a rare instance of a multi-day festival on an island dominated by club parties. It’s also the latest example of rock music creeping into Ibiza’s mostly electronic palette, after Ibiza Rocks, a series of events that began in 2005.

Ibiza 123 Rocktronic will take place on July 1st, 2nd and 3rd at Sunset Strip in San Antonio, and will have space for up to 25,000 attendees.
