Afrojack To Headline Marquee Sydney’s Opening Night
Things have moved very fast for Marquee Sydney. It was just over a month ago that we first reported on developments at The Star for a new 1,200-person superclub, closely followed by the announcement that it would be part of the Marquee empire. US nightclub operator Tao Group is behind the new arrival, following the success of Marquee in New York and more recently at The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas, where the list of residents is suitably star-studded. Marquee – The Star will feature three themed areas across almost 20,000 square feet of floor space, with headliners housed on a ‘30-foot projection stage’ in the main room. You can read more about the fit-out here.
Marquee – The Star opens its doors on the weekend of Friday 30 and Saturday 31 March, and inthemix can exclusively reveal the headliner for opening night. After packing out the mainstage at Stereosonic 2011 (and many, many other festivals around the world), hard-touring superstar Afrojack has been hand-picked as the DJ for opening night on Friday 30 March.
The Dutchman knows a thing or two about Vegas-style clubbing and his booking proves Marquee is going all out on its Sydney venture. We’ve also been told to expect more big names for the club’s roster – and more additions to the opening weekend – so stay tuned for the announcement on inthemix!
Tiesto To Release Club Life: Volume Two Miami April 24
A teasy clip posted on YouTube Tuesday showed a wide shot of what looked to be Tiësto’s 2011 Ultra Music Festival set. The caption below it read, “Any ideas what this might be the first track from?” And on Thursday (March 8), the dance music heavyweight confirmed that his next album drops April 24. Indeed, the moody, building song preview that the clip is set to will be the opening track of the second installment in his Club Lifemix album series, Club Life: Volume Two Miami.
And with dance music enthusiasts counting down the days to Miami Music Week 2012 (March 20 through March 25), an occasion that will see the EDM faithful from around the world heading to Miami’s pools, parks and Ultra Music Festival, the new album’s title makes perfect sense for this time of year.
“I picked Miami because it’s one of my favorite cities in the world,” Tiësto explained in a statement. “There’s so much to do, the club life there is amazing, it’s a very glamorous city. I play in Miami a couple times a year and that’s where I got my inspiration from on this album.”
Camp Tiësto revealed quite a bit about CLV2M: Expect a Tiësto original in “Chasing Summers,” an “enormous” collaboration with Wolfgang Gartner on “We Own the Night” and “a high-energy team-up” with Swanky Tunes on “Make Some Noise.”
On the remix side, CLV2M will feature Tiësto’s already smoldering remix of Coldplay’s “Paradise,” Gotye’s popular hit “Somebody That I Used to Know” and the Naked and Famous’ “Young Blood,” an effort that partnered him with Hardwell, his hometown buddy from Breda, Holland. Fans will be ecstatic to know that the mix album will also include a remix of Afrojack’s latest smash success, “Can’t Stop Me Now,” which the statement describes as a “muscular, floor-filling affair.”
Tiësto is set to headline Ultra Music Festival in Miami, and his label, Musical Freedom, will showcase an as-yet-unannounced roster of talent at the Fontainebleau Hotel’s Arkadia Nightclub on Friday night, March 23.
Additionally piquing the interest of many fans is a possible charity Holland vs. Sweden DJ soccer match, which may take place during the week in Miami. Rumors swirling in the Twitterverse indicate that the Swedish House Mafia gents, Afrojack, Dada Life, Otto Knows, Sunnery & Ryan, Avicii, Alesso and more will be taking part. MTV News will have more on that if and when details emerge (fans can check out @DJFootballGameson Twitter as well).
Club Life: Volume 2 – Miami will also feature Baggi Begovic’s “If a Lie Was Love,” Sultan + Ned Shepard’s “Walls” and Avesta’s “Arena.”
Tiger & Woods Tour the US
Anonymous duo Tiger & Woods will play a number of events in the US this spring.
The secretive pair made their name on a series of disco edit 12-inches, culminating in the release of last year’s Through the Green, an album that RA’s Bruce Tantum saidhad “a steady, patient groove paired with carefully chosen, smartly arranged samples.” The duo will play three different showcases in Miami over the WMC weekend, followed by a headlining gig at San Francisco’s As You Like It party on March 31st. The following month Tiger & Woods will play Chicago’s Smartbar and Brooklyn’s Let’s Play House party at Glasslands Gallery on April 13th and 21st respectively, and will be joined at both shows by Jacques Renault.

Universal Music Starts Indias First Dance Music Label
In the last few years, it seems dance music has been spreading throughout the known world faster than an airborne virus on a Learjet.
No one seems immune to its boisterous charms with the US joining the party en masse and huge clubs popping up everywhere from Egypt to Estonia.
No surprise then that India, one of the worlds fastest growing economies, is getting in on the act too.
This week, Universal Music are setting up India’s first ever purely electronic music label, ContraBass Records.
The label will represent both international and local acts within India and seems a strong indication that the genre is likely to explode in the country over the next few years.
Devraj Sanyal, MD of Universal Music India SAARC, said, “Electronic Music is in my opinion the sound of the youth and the future India.”
The label has planned releases from big guns like Chase & Status and Sub Focus as well as local acts, Lost Stories, Akshai Sarin & AFM.
So another far corner of the earth conquered by the almighty beast that is dance music. Mixmagoffice in Goa anyone?
