James Blake turns “aggressive” and “clubby” for his second album

After famously deriding the hard, macho sound of brostep last year, UK dubstep producer James Blake has admitted that his forthcoming album is going to be “aggressive” and “clubby”. Say what?

Blake told Spinner that the follow up to last year’s eponymous debut is taking a distinct turn from his previous material. “I think it’s going to be a bit more aggressive, to be honest. It seems that way. I don’t feel more aggressive, it’s just been… it’s just how I feel”, he explained. “In terms of writing more club tracks, writing more electronically influenced – I feel like it was all electronically influenced, but now that influence has come to me in a different way.”

“A lot of the vocal music I’ve been doing recently has been quite clubby,” Blake continued, “but that’s mainly because I’ve had more time to go to clubs, and that normally breeds that kind of influence. I’ve been doing quite a few DJ set recently, which have been really fun.”

But the producer also explained that he’s not as bitter about the whole brostep thing as that (in)famous interview might have you believe. “[Dubstep’s] just another dance music genre that’s been filtered into the mainstream and absorbed,” he told Spinner, “and that’s kind of cool.” We’ll be waiting for the drop.

Spring Awakening Music Festival

While those who’ve been holding their breath in anticipation of a summer ’12 appearance from Parisian electro-funk pioneers Daft Punk can finally breathe out, it won’t be a sight of relief. At least not from the looks of the lineup for June’s Spring Awakening Music Festival, which announced dates, location and an initial lineup earlier today.

Sponsored by React Events, the bigwig party promoters behind Congress Theater, the Mid and North Coast Music Festival, Spring Awakening is still going to be a raucous, rave-ready two-day bacchanalia going down on the Stadium Green of Soldier Field on June 16 and 17. Billed as Chicago’s first all-dance music festival, the outdoor dance party is an upgrade of an event that’s sold out the Congress the past two years. Expanding the variety of acts, opening it up to all ages and spreading it out over two days, React is essentially book-ending the summer with two quality EDM-centric outdoor events (North Coast takes place each Labor Day weekend). Kudos.

And while the rumors of a headlining spot from Daft Punk seem to be false, the other artists that were speculated to be on the bill were spot-on. Headlining slots go to dubstep megastar Skrillex and Dutch house favorite Afrojack. Other noteworthy acts include a DJ set from techy originator Moby, bass monsters Flux Pavillion, hipster DJ favorites Diplo and A-Trak, trance kingpin Ferry Corsten and electro don Wolfgang Gartner.

Deeper in the lineup but also of note are San Fran house maestro Claude VonStroke, Chicago’s own Derrick Carter and Green Velvet, moombahton rebel Dillon Francis and dubstep beauties from Down Under, Nervo.

The press release does make note of a second announcement coming soon, offering a glimmer of hope for true believers that the robotic masked duo from France may still be announced, but either way this festival—while not exactly in spring—is shaping up to be a great addition to another music-filled Chicago summer.
