Good morning, I hope you’ve had an enjoyable week thus far! Today’s stories include Live Nation Canada launching an electronic music division, Armin van Buuren on the state of trance, Croatia’s Hideout 2012, and an incredible video from Deadmau5’s Toronto show. I’m featuring an excellent funky tune from our friend, Go Funk Urself, so check it out as you read up on GDD™ Morning Update after the jump.
Live Nation Canada Launches Electronic Music Division
Live Nation Entertainment has hired veteran Canadian electronic music producer Ryan Kruger as managing director of a new Electronic Nation Canada division.
Kruger joins Live Nation after running since 1992 Destiny Productions, where he produced over 600 concerts and club dates, mostly in Toronto.
“With Destiny being a pioneer of the electronic music scene in Canada, it is personally rewarding to see the nation’s largest concert promoter fully committed to the world-wide culture and excitement that is coming from electronic music today,” Kruger said Monday in a statement.
The appointment was unveiled by Riley O’Connor, Live Nation Canada chairman.

Armin van Buuren: “The fun is coming back into trance”
“There’s always been negativity towards trance,” mused Armin van Buuren when inthemix got him on the phone recently. “Back in 2002, I had people around me declaring that trance was dead but it’s still going strong. It’s still an essential force of EDM.”
Despite the detractors, the Stereosonic headliner remains a tireless ambassador for the sound that made his name. As Armin put it to inthemix, the strength of trance lies in the new breed of inspired producers, including fellow Stereosonic visitor Arty.
“I think there’s a lot of high-quality producers,” he said. “If you look at guys like Arty or Orjan Nilsen, who is not only signed to my label but the track I played most this year was his Between The Rays. It’s trance, but in a different way. I feel the fun is coming back into trance again.”
Did trance get a bit serious for his tastes? “Yeah,” Armin laughed. “But trance music is constantly changing. Of course, it still has the elements: of course it’s uplifting, it’s melodic, it’s energetic, it’s 138-BPM. But it should evolve and I think the best producers have an open mind to other genres.”
Hideout 2012 Announces First Batch of Artists
Since invading an unsuspecting venue on the beautiful beach of Zrce, Pag, for a weekend of nonsense in July for the first time earlier this year, Hideout Festival – which brought a devastating artillery of acts (including Eric Prydz, Sven Väth, Marco Carola, Jamie xx, Dixon and Seth Troxler) to its stunning, sun-kissed location – decided the only way is up for an event welcomed with open arms by the clubbers with an ear for a beat worldwide.
Why? Apart from giving 7000 or so discerning ravers an opportunity to get wonky with their mates in the blazing sun on the beach or on a boat, it’s diverse spread of dancefloor acts won hearts from the off, and next year it’s destined to set another precedent, picking bigger and better acts and spreading across more stages and venues to this time entice 10,000 to the beautiful Island of Pag.
So far, Ricardo Villalobos, Skream, Annie Mac, Jamie Jones and Skrillex top the bill, alongside dnb honcho Andy C, Dirtybird headman Claude Vonstroke and Crosstown Rebel’s boss Damian Lazarus. Spreading the net even further, Erol Alkan will add some tech-heavy electro into the mix, Soul Clapwill inject some deep disco grooves while Prins Thomas will take things to the upper reaches of the cosmos (full line-up so far below).
So, grab your weekend tickets (only £99) for Hideout 2012 (29th June – 1st July) now, and get planning a summer holiday with rave benefits to look forward to – dipping in the sea, jamming on the beach and grooving on a boat. It doesn’t get much better than this.
